DepEd for no- homework policy

The Department of Education gave its support for the makers of

the proposed bill no-home work policy. Wednesday, August 28,
2019, DepEd states that "learners would have more quality time
with their parents, family, and friends by limiting homework and
assignments to a reasonable quantity on schools days and by
eliminating the same during weekends". The policy would allow
students to find same perspectives both academic and individual
growth by having quality time with their families. Two of the
makers of this policy give separated bills in the same month, the
House Deputy Speaker Evelinda Escudero and Quezon City
Representative Alfred Vargas.

Escudero filed House Bill No.3611, which seek to remove

homework from Kinder to Grade12 and all the activities should
done within the school premises. He explained that this
assignments and homework hinders parents and students to have
ample time and it is something to take away from rest, relaxation
and interaction with love ones. He also added that the bill seeks
to prohibit students from taking textbooks at home to lessen the
physical burden of the learners. On the other hand, Vargas filed
House Bill No. 3883 which seeks to eliminate homework on
weekends in Elementary and High School with the same reason.
In addition to that, he cited a 2018 study from a public school in
South Africa contained this similar policy. This bill is learner-
centered to protect the physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and
social well-being of the youth.

In contrast with this, the concerned teachers give their side with
this issue by stating this “We are not issuing homework to burden
our students. It is demanded us by the K to 12 program, so much
that our performance evaluation system ensures its
implementation”. While, Teacher’s Dignity Coalition said; “Our
teachers are trained educators. We know the value of homework.
It’s about discipline, responsibility and continuity of learning.
