We use was and were to describe characteristics, states, and places in the past.

Past Simple ‘Negative & Interrogative’


We use the auxiliary did to make negative sentences and questions in past simple.

Negative Interrogative
Subject + did not / didn’t + verb + object. Did + subject + verb + object ?

I didn’t go to school yesterday.  Did you go to school yesterday?


Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
She did not wash clothes last week.  Did she wash her clothes last week?
Yes, she did. / No, she didn’t.
They didn’t study for the exam.  Did they study for the exam?
Yes, they did. / No, they didn’t.
