B. Motivation
Teacher’s Activity Learners’ Activity
Class, before we proceed to our topic for
today let us have first a game. The title of our
game for today is “Find your X”. The first
thing to do is to keep quiet, is that clear? Yes, Ma’am

Before I say the mechanics of the game, may

I have first ten volunteers, two boys each
group.
The mechanics of the game is this:

 The ten volunteers shall receive a

flash card, which contains an equation.
 The rest of the class shall also receive
a flash card, which contains the
answer.
 When I say “go around”, you should
find your perfect pair to answer the
equation.
 After that, prove to me and to your
classmates, that she is your perfect
match.

Can we start now? Yes, Ma’am!

Are you ready?

 3x - 3 = 6  1
 2x + 4 = 2  -1
 5x + 10 = -5  -3
 x–8=0  8
 4x + 2 = -6  -2
 6x - 3 = 9  2
 2x -3 = 3  3
 x+1=1  0
 x+2=6  4
 2x - 5 = 5  5

It seems that you really master this topic

when you were grade seven, so our topic for
today will become easy to all of you.

C. Discussion
Teacher’s Activity Learners’ Activity
Today’s lesson is about solving rational
algebraic expression.

But before we to proceed in solving, we will

define first the rational expression and
rational equation.

What is rational expression? Rational expression is a fraction with a

polynomial in the numerator and/or
denominator
How about rational equation? Rational equation is an equation that contains
one or more rational expressions

What is the connection between the two

terminologies? Equations that contain rational
expressions are called rational equations

Very good!

By the way, in this topic we will meet

extraneous solution, what is extraneous Extraneous solution are solutions that don't
solution? satisfy the original form of the equation
because they produce untrue statements or are
excluded values that make a denominator
equal to 0.

Now that we already know all the terms that

we need in order to solve the rational
algebraic equation, let’s have an example.

One method for solving rational equations is

to rewrite the rational expressions in terms of
a common denominator. Then, since you
know the numerators are equal, you can solve
for the variable. To illustrate this, let’s look at
a very simple equation.

Since the denominator of each expression is

the same, the numerators must be equivalent. x=2
This means that?

Nice!

This is true for rational equations with

polynomials too.
Since the denominators of each rational
expression are the same, x + 4, the numerators
must be equivalent for the equation to be true. x = 16
So, x – 5 = 1, what is the final answer?

What if we need to solve a rational expression

with not the same denominator, how can we Ma’am, I think we need to get first the LCD.
solve that?

Yes, that’s right!

But now I’ll show to you another method to

solve rational expression wherein it is in the
form of a proportion.

When we say proportion, what does it mean?

Ma’am, it is a statement that two ratios are
equal.
Very good!

To illustrate:

you can use "product of the means = product

of the extremes"
or "cross-multiplication" to eliminate the
denominator,
as in: .

Then solve the resulting equation and check.

For example:

Cross-multiply to get:
Now, solve to find x.
Check the answer by substitution.

Work the
expressions to
get equality.

The answer is correct.

How about solving rational expression with

not the same denominator and not proportion
to one another?

I’ll show you how to do that…

To solve the rational equation with three or

more terms.

(1) Identify the least common denominator

(LCD),

(2) Multiply each side of the equation by the

LCD, simplify, then

(3) Solve the resulting equation, and

(4) Check the answer.

Let’s have an example,

What is the LCD in the equation?

Multiply equation by 12x.

Distribute the 12x, and simplify.

Re-write the equation and solve

Check the answer by substitution

Why do we need to check our final answer?

Checking is very important in rational
equations, because there is what we called a
excluded values and extraneous solution.

D. Application
Teacher’s Activity Learners’ Activity
Group Activity.

Solve the following rational algebraic

equations and answer this question: “What
will you get if you solved these equations?”
These letters will guide you:
C. x = 2, L. x = 1, U. x = -15, E. x = 7, S. x = 3
Answers:

E. Valuing
Teacher’s Activity Learners’ Activity

It is good to find out the value of every single

thing in this world. Do you agree with that? Yes, because everything has a certain worth
and you must respect and aware of it.
F. Generalization
Teacher’s Activity Learners’ Activity
We have learned the steps in solving the
algebraic rational expression so before we end
the discussion, once again, what are the steps
in solving rational algebraic equations with
not the same denominator and not proportion
to one another?

Step 1? Identify the least common denominator

(LCD),

Step 2? Multiply each side of the equation by the

LCD, simplify, then

Step 3? Solve the resulting equation

Step 4? Check the answer.

Very good!
