3.4 Testing Switched-Mode Power Supply Transformers

1 Transformer Basics

2 Available Tests
3 Examples of Different Transformer
Types
3.0 Constructing A Test Program

3.1 Using The Editor Software To

Create Test Programs
3.2 Testing Line Frequency
Transformer
3.3 Testing Miniature Line
Frequency Bobbin Transformers
3.4 Testing Switched-Mode Power The fixture program describes the relationship between the transformer terminal name and the AT
Supply Transformers SERIES Node to which it has been wired.
3.5 Pulse Transformer

3.6 Testing Audio Transformers The test program and all test results will then refer to transformer terminals, not AT SERIES nodes.

3.7 Current Transformers Recommend measurements for switched mode transformers

3.8 DC Chokes Test Why?

Winding Resistance To ensure that correct wire or foil has

been used during winding. Checks that
transformer has been properly installed in
test fixture

Inductance Ensures that winding has correct primary

turns, and the proper air gap or grade of
magnetic material. For transformers
without air gaps it ensures that core
faces have been cleaned and are
sufficiently tight.

(Q factor) Can be used to detect shorted turns in

wires or foils that have occurred during
assembly.

Turns Ratio and Phasing Checks that transformer has correct turns
on every winding. Verifies that polarity of
each winding is correct

Leakage Inductance Checks that windings have been

correctly positioned on bobbin

Interwinding Capacitance Checks that proper spacing has been

achieved between windings

Leakage Current Required for SMPS transformers used in

medical applications

Insulation Resistance Checks non-safety insulation between

windings and screens

Hi-Pot Checks safety isolation. Primaries to

secondaries (and to safety screen and
core)
