any of these devotions?
As Filipinos, why do we have a
strong devotion to Mary?
 As Filipinos, we are friendly, respectful of the elderly, hospitable,
gracious hosts and grateful guests.
 We have such a close-knit families that we give primary
importance to our relationship with our parents and siblings.
 Our close relationship with our parents makes it easy
for us to relate to God the Father in a childlike manner
and to our Lord Jesus in a fraternal way.
 It is Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who entrusts us
to his Mother, the blessed Virgin Mary at the
foot of the cross, who in turn draws us close to
his beloved Son.
Do you have any knowledge of
the history of the Holy Rosary?

As this form of devotion became increasingly popular, people started
to devise methods in order to keep track of their prayers. At first, 150
little pebbles were placed inside small leather pouches to keep count.

Since this method was rather

troublesome, a thin rope having 50
knots on it was used instead (it was
used three times for a total of 150
prayers). Eventually, the instrument
of choice became the use of string
with small pieces of wood.

In later years, the Irish

monks traveled throughout
Europe and brought this
form of devotion with them
In some areas, both clergy and lay people began to recite the "Angelic
Salutation" (the first part of what we now know as the "Hail Mary") as
part of this devotion. The popularity of this prayer led to the adoption
of 50 Angelic Salutations being said for each piece of wood or knot on
the prayer string.

[1000 AD]
150 knots became 50; this is to be recited 3 times a day.
The devotion became popular among lay people.
The Lord’s Prayer was replaced with the Angel’s salutation to Mary or
what we know now as the Hail Mary

1200 AD
Praises for Jesus and Mary were prayed after every psalm.
Praises were divided into 3, thus having 50, thus fitting the prayer
string.
[13th century]
Medieval theologians began
to interpret the 150 psalms

which could be compared to a bouquet

[15th century]
The Rosary was divided into three
Chaplets of 50 Hail Marys each, at
which time five mysteries were added
to each Chaplet.
[16th century]
The fifteen mysteries had become
accepted by all as the proper way of
reciting the Rosary. During that period of

Rosary as it was
known throughout the
world.
Pope Pius V established the Feast of the Rosary in thanksgiving to Our Lady to
commemorate the naval victory of Lepanto on October 7, 1571.
The Battle of Lepanto is a great lesson of confidence for us today.
Mohammedans, at the peak of their naval power in the Mediterranean, threatened to
overrun Christian Europe. In this extremity Pope Pius V formed a league against them. The
Christian fleet, furnished by Venice, Genoa, and Spain was commanded by Don Juan of
Austria.
On that same day, the first Sunday of October, Don John of Austria defeated the
Turkish fleet while the members of the Rosary confraternity made their procession
in Rome.
As the Christian fleet sailed toward the great clash of cultures, Mass was
celebrated and the rosary recited daily on each vessel. This heartfelt request
for divine assistance resulted in a crushing defeat of the Ottomans at
Lepanto that ended their dominance in the Mediterranean.

The Battle of Lepanto, October 7, 1571.

[1700 ]
Around the year 1700, the thoughts used in the rosary started to
become narratives. St. Louis de Montfort composed the most
common set of narratives that eventually used as meditations for
each decade of the rosary. The mysteries of the rosary were
introduced: Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious.
In 1883, Pope Leo XIII issued
an encyclical in which he
commended to the faithful the
devotion to Our Lady of the
Rosary, attributing its origin to
2002 St. Dominic.
In October 16, 2002, The Church
in the Papacy of John Paul II
introduced the Mysteries of Light
depicting the ministry of Jesus.

• The Manifestation at the
Wedding of Cana
• The Proclamation of the

• The Transfiguration
• The Institution of the
Holy Eucharist
This innovated version of the rosary was widely spread by
Blessed Alan de la Roche of the Dominican Order, as it
revived the divinely inspired works that St. Dominic and
his Rosary Confraternity had initiated some hundred years
earlier.
The prayers of the Rosarium were later broken out into
sets of 10 and these groupings became known as
decades. Each decade of ten "Hail Mary" prayers would
be preceded by one "Our Father".
Other important dates to
remember about the Rosary
Shortly after September 12, 1213, St. Dominic
turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary for the
triumph of Catholic arms.
As St. Dominic was kneeling before the Sacred
Altar in the Church of St. Jacques, Our Lady
appeared to him and instructed him to preach
the Rosary among the people as a cure for
heresy and sin.

Keeping all this in mind, it was not until Our Lady

of Fatima appeared to the three children on May
13, 1917 that she revealed herself to be Our Lady of
the Rosary.
Recognizing the apparitions of Fatima as being
worthy of belief, on October 13, 1930, the bishop
of Fatima authorized devotion to Our Lady of the
Rosary at Fatima. The three children were Lúcia Santos and
her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto
WHAT IS THE HOLY ROSARY?

A PRAYER TO MARY
AN OPPORTUNITY
TO REFLECT
ON THE LIFE OF JESUS
A VOCAL AND MENTAL PRAYER:
REFLECT AND PRAY
“The Rosary, though clearly
Marian in character, is at heart a
Christ-centered prayer.”
Pope John Paul II
THE HOLY ROSARY

“The Rosary, though

clearly Marian in
character, is at heart, a
Christocentric prayer... It
has all the depth of the
Gospel message in its
entirety, of which it can be
said to be a compendium”
(JP II, Rosarium Virginis
Mariae, 1).
The Structure of the Rosary

 The Rosary is divided into five decades (5 groups of 10

beads).
 Each decade represents a mystery or
event in the life of Jesus with Mary.
 During private recitation
of the Rosary, each decade requires
devout contemplation, reflection,
or meditation on a specific mystery.

 When we pray the Rosary,

we pray the Gospel!

PRAYERS
1. The OUR FATHER
Our father, who art in heaven; hallowed by Thy name; Thy
kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
2. The HAIL MARY
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art
thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
3. The GLORY BE
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
HAIL HOLY QUEEN
The Rosary is usually concluded by saying the Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life,

our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we
cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do
we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping
in this valley of tears. Turn then, most
gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy
toward us, and after this our exile, show unto
us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O
clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

That we may be made worthy of the promises

of Christ.
LET US PRAY…

O God, Whose only-begotten

Son, by His life, death and
resurrection, has purchased for
us the rewards of eternal life,
grant, we beseech You, that

Why do we pray the Holy Rosary
during the month of October?
The month of October each year is
dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary.
• the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the
Rosary is celebrated annually on
October 7th.
• It was instituted to honor the Blessed
Virgin Mary in gratitude for the
protection that she gives the Church in
answer to the praying of the Rosary by
the faithful.
• The feast was introduced by Pope St.
Pius V (1504-1572) in the year
1571 to commemorate the miraculous
victory of the Christian forces in the
Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571.
THE HOLY ROSARY

I promise my special protection and

the greatest graces to all those who
shall recite the Rosary.

Is praying the Holy Rosary a
way of worshipping Mary?

As Miriam students, how should we regard Mary

and the praying of the Holy Rosary?
It’s Important to Remember
 As you will see the rosary is Biblically based
and so are its prayers.
 This is NOT a form of worshipping Mary,
Catholics never do that.
 The only one Catholics worship is the Trinity,
which of course is God.
 Also the “Hail Mary,” comes from the Gospel
of Luke
Seeking the intercession of the Virgin
Mary through the Marian Sacramental of
the Holy Rosary and the miraculous
medal, as Catholics we pray to God
through Mary.
While reflecting upon the mysteries
continues to be the norm of the Catholic
faithful, now, based on the apparition of
Our Lady of the Rosary in Fatima,
additional emphasis has been placed on

repentance,
praying for peace,
Praying for sinners and
doing penance.

Through this spiritual devotion, the Holy

Rosary, Our Lady assures the world that
evil shall be overcome and that there will
be a time of peace.
1. Owns a rosary
2. Prays the rosary.
3. Propagates the devotion
to the Holy Rosary.
As Miriam students,
which virtues of Mary
can you emulate in
our everyday living?
“Among all the devotions approved by the Church, none has
been so favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the
Most Holy Rosary.” -Pope Pius IX
