What is Environmental Science?

 Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates

physical, biological and information sciences (including ecology, biology ,
physics, chemistry, plant science, zoology, mineralogy, oceanography, soil
science, geology and physical geography and atmospheric sciences).
 Is the study of interaction of humans with the natural environment.
 Is the study of environment in which organisms live.
 An integrated science which draws from different field of science. Biology
because of organisms. Physics because of energy and motions, chemistry
because biosphere are made up of matter, and other scientist that made up
of society.

Parts of the Environment

Biotic
all living parts of the environment.
humans,microbes,plants,animals and insects.

Abiotic
all nonliving parts of the environment.
water,soil,air,temperature,wind,sunlight
and wood

Environment
 Is an evergreen subject because it matters a lot to our daily lives. It is
where we live, eat, breathe and bring up our children. Our life support
systems entirely rely on the well-being of every organisms living planet.
 Everything that surrounds us is part of the environment. This includes living
things like plants and animals, and also beaches and mountains. The air we
breathe, the sunlight that provides warmth, and the water that we use in
our homes, schools and businesses.
 Everything that surrounds an organism; living things and non-living things
that interact with human.
 An organisms environment provides everything the organisms need in order
to live. The environment provides food, water, shelter, air and other
resources.
 If conditions in the environment change, the organisms may not be able to
survive. Keeping the environment healthy id the first step in making sure
that the biosphere can continue to support life in the future.
The environment includes all conditions that surround all living
organisms.

 Climate
 Air and water quality
 Soil and landforms
 Presence of other living organisms

Importance

1. To realize that environmental problems are global

 Global warming
 Ozone layer depletion
 Acid rains
 Loss of biodiversity
 Smog/pollution
 Overpopulation
 Natural resources dehydration
 Diseases and malnutrition
2. To understand the impacts of development on environment
 Industrialization
 Urbanization
 Expansion of telecom and transport system
3. To discover sustainable ways of living
 Minimizing household energy consumption
 Using disposals to dispose waste
 Growing your own food
 Drinking from the tap
 Conserving household water
 Eating locally
 Recycling more
 Less driving of cars
4. To utilize natural resources efficiently
 Appropriately putting into practice environment conservation
methods
 Using the right tools to explore resources
 Adding value to our resources
 Making sure machines are maintained properly
 Through training of human resources
 Provision of effective and efficient supervisions
 Using the right techniques to minimize exploitation
 To understand behavior of organisms under natural conditions
5. To shed light on contemporary concepts such as how to
conserve biodiversity.
 Using sustainable products
 Using organic foods
 Embracing the 3R’s (reduce.reuse.recycle)
 Purchasing sustainable seafoods
 Supporting conservation campaign at local levels
 Conserving power
 Minimizing consumption of meat
 Utilizing eco-friendly cleaning products
 To understand the interrelationship between organisms,
population and communities.
6. To learn and create awareness about environmental
problems, local and national and international levels.
 Environmental science aims to educate and equip learners with
necessary environmental skills to pass to the community in order
to create awareness. environmental awareness can be created
through social media, creating blog dedicated to awareness,
community centered green clubs, women forums and religious
podiums.
