ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the effects of the screening examination
and the redirection policy of the accountancy program of the University of Northern
Philippines to the emotional state of the students of BSA-IC. A questionnaire survey was
used as the research instrument in gathering data. The data gathered were analyzed and
interpreted through the use of tallying, frequency count and distribution and presented
through the use of tables.

The results of the study revealed that the screening examination and redirection
policy of the accountancy program of the University of Northern Philippines generally
showed a positive effect among the concerned respondents. Thus, it was concluded that
the screening examination and redirection policy of the accountancy program of the
University of Northern Philippines were helpful in producing good quality graduates of
the said program. It is, therefore recommended that the University of Northern
Philippines should maintain the said examination and policy. Furthermore, a research of
the same motive should be conducted to test further the effects of the screening
examination and redirection policy of the accountancy program of the University of
Northern Philippines.
Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program in University of Northern


Philippines is one of the most recommended and prioritized course in University of
Northern Philippines for it holds the highest standard of education concerning in all the
business courses. It has the highest entrance examination cut-off (85%); which maintains
the high standard and excellent performance of the professors and the students. The
University never failed to be in the top 10 lists of the most outstanding Universities in
terms of outstanding outputs and passing rate in the Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Licensure Examination.

In fact, five among the CBAA Faculty- Professor Nellie B. Belen, Prof. Juanita
Q. Rabena, Professor Juanito R. Rialubin, Professor Madelyn R. Rialubin & Professor
Corazon B. Urbis were recipients of Service Awards for 30 Years of Continuous & Very
Satisfactory Service and Professor Ronald A. Alconis was also a recipient of Service
Award for 20 Years of Continuous & Very Satisfactory Service during the UNP
Foundation Day on October 14, 2012 at the UNP Auditorium, Vigan City; which states
that BS Accountancy is a more reliable and excellent course.

The accountancy program in UNP requires a lot to a person who wishes to enter
of the said program. The Redirection is one of the practices of the Bachelor of Science in
Accountancy program implied at the end of the every semester as a result of unable to
meet the required grade which is 2.5 or not passing the screening
examination/elimination. If the student failed to meet the grade he/ she is redirected to the
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program or he/ she may shift to another
course.

Bachelor of Science in Accountancy is indeed hard but it aims to produce globally


competitive professionals in business and allied fields. The students are trained to
become competent, dedicated, development- oriented, socially responsive and morally
upright professionals and community leaders. And it promotes the all-inclusive
development of the business students by providing ways or possibilities for them to go
through the process of professional and personal development by enriching their
knowledge, enhancing their skills and reinforcing their values.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the effects of the screening examination and the
redirection policy of the accountancy program of the University of Northern Philippines
to the emotional state of the students who are enrolled. This study ought to answer this
question:

1. What are the effects of the screening examination and the redirection policy to the
emotional state of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy Section C?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The respondents of this research study are the students of thirty two BSA-1C
students who are enrolled for the second semester in the school year 2015-2016. It is
limited only to the extent where the respondents are freely able to answer the given
questionnaire.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The screening examination and the redirection policy have a big impact to a BSA
student. It can be a negative or a positive effect depending on the capability of the
students. This study is important to the following:

To the students. This study will give them knowledge and let them be aware of
the different effects of the screening examination and redirection policy to their
emotional state.

To the parents. It will give them awareness to the possible effects of the
screening examination and redirection policy to the emotional state of their children and
make them understand why their children undergo such situation. And that will also make
them do more of guiding.
To the teachers and administration. It will give them awareness about the
effects of screening and redirection policy to the emotion of the students.

METHODOLOGY
This portion of the study provides a discussion of the population, data gathering
instruments, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data.

Population
The population of the study consisted of thirty-two students of the Bachelor of
Science in Accountancy 1-C students; enrolled in University of the Northern
Philippines School Year 2015- 2016 during second semester were taken as
respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers conducted their research using the sampling technique. The
researchers distributed the questionnaires and gathered them after the students answered
the questionnaires. The researchers tallied the answer after that and interpret it.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents analyses and interprets the data on the effects of the
screening examination and the redirection policy to the emotional state of the students of
BSA 1-C, school year 2015-2016.

Questions numbers (1, 3,5,6,7,9,11, and 13) has a negative effect to the emotional state of
the BSA 1-C students concerning the screening examination and redirection policy.

Out of the 32 students, 20 (63.39 % of 32) of them agreed, that the redirection policy and
the screening examination had a negative effect on them; While 12 (36.61%of 32) of
them answered that screening examination and redirection policy has no effect to their
emotional state.

Out of the 32 student 25 (76.79 % of 32) of them agreed, that the redirection
policy and the screening examination had a positive effect on them while 7 (23.21%of
32) of them answered no, the redirection policy and the screening examination will not
positively affect their emotional state.
Chapter III

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The results and findings showed that the redirection policy and the screening
examination have an overall positive impact to the students/respondents of the study. As
per data gathered, out of the 14 questions of which 7 of them were positively constructed
and the other 7 questions were in negative manner, in Table I, results showed that 63.39%
of the respondents said that the redirection and screening examination had made them
worried, afraid, threatened and pressured. In Table II where the questions were positively
constructed, findings showed that 76.79% said that the redirection and screening
examination were not that much affecting their overall emotional state and were only
factors that could help them pursue more their accounting subject.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, the researchers conclude that the redirection and screening


examination of the accountancy program of the University of Northern Philippines
generally showed a positive effect among the concerned respondents.

RECOMMENDATION

Since the results and findings showed a positive effect on the emotional state of
the students/respondents of BSA-IC, the researchers recommend that students must strive
harder to develop and enhance their capabilities, become more motivated and determined
to pursue their studies and will able to pass the accountancy program. In relation to the
program, we recommend the screening examination and retention policy of accountancy
program of UNP to be maintained. Moreover, a research of the same motive should be
conducted to test further the effects of the screening examination and redirection policy
of the accountancy program of the University of Northern Philippines.
