FILM CITY

AIM
To design a programme which activate it physically , functionally and socially. Which
gives a rise to new architecture . In this physically through form, functionally through
programme, socially through space creating . Ever since the first movie made in 1887. The
need of film making facilities under single roof .
Film city can provide a great place to provide all facility of directing movie as well as
advertisement. In future this can be used as a museum and tourism place .

INTRODUCTION
Architecture is a vast branch of science which are similarities with many art forms. in
this way ,cinema is also closer to architecture, because both architecture and cinemas deal
with space .architecture deals with physical reality and cinema depicts the same. In this
creating a space is the fundamental task of architecture. The structure of place, space,
situation, scale are unavoidable into every cinematic expression.
Architecture gives meaning to the situation in film and acts as a resonator in making
the scene look more natural . both form of architecture and cinema define the dimension
and essence of existential space, they both create experience scenes of life situation

Justification
India is crazy about films. Movie making is a big business here and on an average
about 14 million people go to theatres to watch a movie and about 4 billion tickets are sold
annually.so Indian hold 4 main film city in india.
The biggest being Ramoji Film City in Andhra Pradesh. World’s Largest Film Studio Complex,
was launched in 1996.with area of 1666 acres.
The most popular film studio, Mumbai film City is situated in Goregaon East, in the vicinity
of Aarey Colony. film city of Mumbai started its journey in 1911
The MGR Film City was built in 1994 . the MGR Film City is a popular tourist spot and the
setting of several South Indian films. The film city has a film school, indoor and outdoor
shooting locations, replicas of village and urban areas, temple, church, mosque, post office,
police station, prison, courtroom, and landscaped gardens in Italian, Japanese and Mughal
styles.
The Noida Film City was built in 1987 by Sandeep Marwah, and it lies across 100 acres of
land wherein 25 acres is covered with only the indoor studio. a large number of private

broadcasting and transmitting stations that have moved to the NCR region, the Film City has
become a first choice for shooting television serials, news and other entertainment-cum-
education programs for various channels.

Chennai is also In need of a film city, kollywood industry is also planning to build another
film city in Chennai, since there is a rapid growth of film making. And there is no film city
with all the amenities in Chennai. So that this improve the avoiding of money spend for
transport and etc

OBJECTIVE

Resolving the issues faced by the outdoor sets in Indian Film Cities and their
architectural solutions.
Since outdoor sets are the replicas of the existing streetscapes, townscapes,
landscapes, etc, the study of practical implication of urban design concepts will help in
deriving design guidelines for the outdoor sets in film cities.
Design guidelines for the outdoor sets in film cities are for the development of
existing and upcoming film cities in India.
Design guidelines are for the aspiring architects including myself who wants to
enter into set design.
METHODOLOGY

Understanding fundamentals of set design

Studying cinematic interpretation of architectural space from Films.

Studying the use of false or forced perspective, optical plays, illumination, and
types of cameras used camera angles, landscape, etc in design of outdoor sets.

Understanding of Cinematography techniques in highlighting the set design.

Drawing information and suggestions from Art-Directors with respect to outdoor


Set Design.

Understanding the principles of urban design and landscape design

Studying the fundamental urban design principles used in design of different types
of streetscapes, townscapes, urban spaces, public places, landscapes, etc which can be
utilized for the formulation of design guidelines for outdoor set design in film city.
Studying the fundamental landscape design principles used in design of different
types of landscapes, gardens, streetscapes, townscapes, urban spaces, public spaces, etc.
which can be utilized for the formulation of design guidelines for outdoor sets in film city.

SCOPE

The scope of this thesis includes inferences / conclusions and formulation of design
guidelines for outdoor sets in Film Cities.

This thesis does not include post production facilities and indoor set design.

This thesis is limited only for the formulation •of architectural solutions for various
outdoor sets.
Design guidelines will be taking into account the technical aspects of set design and ' will
be based on practical implication of urban design and set design concepts.
