ABSTRACT

Insect repellents and insect killers are important tools for prevention of insect-borne

diseases as well as painful or uncomfortable insect bites. And one of natural insect killers is

the pomelo peel (Citrus maxima).

The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of pomelo peel

(Citrus maxima) as mosquito killer. Three (3) set ups were made namely: (1) 5 mL of pomelo

peel oil extract and 35 mL of melted candle wax; (2) 10 mL of pomelo peel oil extract and 30

mL of melted candle wax; and (3) 15 mL of pomelo peel oil extract and 25 mL of melted candle

wax. These set ups were compared based on the number of mosquitoes killed in the three (3)

trials.

The main materials of the study consisted of 90 mL of pomelo peel oil extract and 270

mL of melted candle wax. The pertinent findings of this study were (1) The findings indicate

that there is no uniformity as to the average mortality rate of mosquitoes when test according

to percent composition by volume. (2) There is a significant difference on the effectiveness of

pomelo peel candle in killing mosquitoes when test according to percent composition by

volume. It implies that the higher the pomelo peel oil present in the candle, the more mosquitoes

it will kill. (3) There is a significant relationship between the percent composition by volume

of the pomelo peel and the average mortality rate of mosquitoes. It shows that percent

composition by mass of pomelo peel present in the candle affects (direct relationship) the

number of mosquitoes died. (4) The most effective percent composition by volume is 15 mL

of pomelo peel oil extract and 25 mL of melted candle wax.

The results further verified that the pomelo peel candle was effective in killing mosquitoes.
