Project Overview:
We have seen various technology developments in the sector of health and
assistive devices from last 2-3 years which includes latest trends like AI, AR &
VR, IoT etc. But very few of them are working on the problems faces by our
elderly age groups. We then decided to encounter some of the common
problems that people who comes under (60-90s) age group faces.

The common problems that we have encountered were:

 Chances of falling due to balancing issues

 Problem in climbing stairs due to arthritis in lower limb
 Problem in sitting on/off chair due to arthritis in lower limb
 Problem in walking on uneven surfaces

We started looking for such devices like canes or sticks that offer such facilities
to encounter these problems. Unfortunately we couldn’t find related devices
which offer solutions for above mentioned problems.

We then formed a team of designers, engineers and started working on the

possible solutions that could meet the requirements.

We then participated in Smart India Hackathon (Hardware Edition) 2019.

 Mechanisms of Multipurpose adjustable cane:

o Knee support mechanism: Knee support mechanism offers support
while sitting and standing from the chair. It has a small adjustable hollow
pipe, hinge with main frame which has cushion covering.
o Extended base platform: It offers good base of support with 8-9 cm in
height which is made exactly half of architectural code of India for height
of the stairs. The base will be helpful in climbing stairs for those who have
range blockage in their knee.
o ‘Z’ shape mechanism: It is helpful in adjusting the handle of cane/stick
according to user’s comfortability.
o Height varying mechanism: It is useful in adjusting the height of cane
according to the need of the user with a single push button.

 User feedbacks:
o Knee support mechanism should be enhanced
o Frame should be light in weight
o Platform should be foldable
o Should be more portable and ease in assembly/disassembly

Architecture:
We participated in Smart India Hackathon (Hardware Edition) 2019 by
putting the ideology of Prototype 1, we then came in touch with Ms.
Suvarna Patil (Design mentor). We had gone through a number of design
iterations and material selection process for making the device user
friendly, Intuitive, Cost effective, Safe and reliable. The device just cost
around Rs. 700/- and have weight of 700-800 gms.

Currently, the final prototype is made of:

 High grade Aluminium alloy

 ABS plastic for base
 3D printed joints

Due to our problem solving approach and a good finishing design in the
form of a device which is having large target audience and a healthy
market with few competitors. We won the hackathon and enlisted for
business incubation process by MHRD Innovation cell, Govt of India.
