    P waves are the first seismic wave recorded during an earthquake. S waves are the second type recorded. Seismograms are records made by seismographs, which are devices that detect earthquake waves. Subduction occurs when one tectonic plate thrusts under another into the mantle. Transform boundaries are produced when two plates slide past each other. Trenches are depressions in the seafloor caused by subduction. Volcanic island arcs form parallel to trenches as chains of volcanoes.
