ABSTRACT
As the world become more influenced with high technology. People are more likely to interact using their
mobile phones. Because of the free access in social media, people can chat, upload pictures or even post
what is on their mind. In this study, we aim to discuss about the pros and cons of the discourse in social
media and how social media relationships are created. This can also help the young generations to
understand that being in a free site is not free.

The researchers used a phenomenological method in conducting this study. It is to identify or to analyze
the experience of the selected participants.

Based on our analysis, Facebook are the number one dating application among the other famous social
media apps.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter include the introduction, statement of the problem, scope and limitation,
significance of the study, theoretical background, conceptual framework and definition of terms.

Introduction

As the world became more influenced with high technology. People are more likely to interact
using their mobile phones. Facebook is the number one that the younger generations often used as a
tool for socializing. In the Philippines, there are 27,054,000 users as of 2012 which made it as number
8 in the rankings of users in the world. Because of the free access of the app, they can freely chat,
upload or even post what's on their mind, many of whom spend a several hours a day in this site.

Social media is a form of electronic communication, through which users create online
communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content. Social media is a new way
to send a letter with a fast speed, it also helps you to express your feelings in a way that you can feel relax.

In addition with that, social media are not necessarily for relaxation only. Based on the study
conducted by Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe (2007) which examined the relationship between use of
Facebook, a popular social media application site. They concluded that "online interactions do not
necessarily remove people from their offline world but may indeed be used to support relationships and
keep people in contact, even when life changes move them away from each other."

True Gen theory is a new generation of influencers. Such behaviors influence the way Gen Zers view

(Francis & Hoefel, 2018)

A Triangular theory of love is the components interact with each other and with the actions that they
produce different kinds of loving experiences. It is proposed that this theory provides a comprehensive
basis for understanding many aspects of the love that underlies close relationship (Stenberg, 1986)

The Language and discourses in social media relational dynamics is the theoretical proposition that
suggest that social media are communicatively constituted, just as are relationships; thus, rational
dynamics in social media that feature written communications should be analyzed through the study of
actors’ language and discourses (Valentini, Romenti & Krukeberg, 2016)

Solis (2005) This study is a novel examination of the conflicting perspectives on technology’s

implications for mobile romance. Proposes a framework for understanding computer-mediated

relationships based on three main factors: (1) The characteristics of participants and nature of their

romantic relationships; (2) Level of intimacy that is achieved through mediated communication;

(3) Technology distinct contribution to the formation of these relationships. The study’s primary

finding is that romantic relationships initiated and maintained through texting are capable of

developing into higher levels of intimacy.

XII
A STUDY ON THE DISCOURSE IN SOCIAL MEDIA OF ONLINE RELATIONSHIPS

Solis (2007) This study examined the use of mobile phones and the relational context being

created through this wireless messaging system and also the contributions of the texting

technology that allowed development of romantic relationships among its users. Other researchers

argue that texting has made it possible to create new unsurveilled and unconventional human

relationships.

Foreign

Collins (2003) This research has been impeded by erroneous assumptions that adolescent

relationships are trivial and transitory. This article proposes that distinguishing five features of

romantic relationships is essential to describing adolescents’ relationships and their developmental

significance such as involvement, partner selection, relationship content, quality and cognitive &

emotional processes. Research is needed to illuminate questions of how and what conditions

romantic relationship affect individual development and jointly influence developmental

trajectories during adolescence.

According to the study of Walsh, Wolak and Mitchell (2003) the purpose of this research

was to explore characteristics of youth who reported close relationships with people they met

online. One in ten adolescents reported a close relationship; relationship with adults and many of

these were teens who had an online relationship. The great majority of youth were not afraid or

uncomfortable during face-to-face meetings and it was common for parents to know of meetings.

XII
A STUDY ON THE DISCOURSE IN SOCIAL MEDIA OF ONLINE RELATIONSHIPS

According to Anderson and Emmers-Sommer (2006) One hundred fourteen individuals

involved in online romantic relationships who had only engaged in computer-mediated

communication (CMC) with their relationships. They examined predictors of relationship

satisfaction for individuals involved in online romantic relationships. Intimacy and trust were

found to be the strongest predictors depending on relationship length and time spent

communicating.

According to Hand, Thomas, Buboltz et al. (2013) Online social networks such as facebook

have gained immense popularity and potentially affect the way people build. This study found a

negative relationship between intimacy and the perception of a romantic partner’s use of online

social networks. Additionally, it was found that intimacy mediates the relationship satisfaction.

Papp, Danielewicz and Cayemberg (2012) This study examined male and female dating

partners. Facebook use and portrayals of their intimate relationship on the facebook profile. Male

and female reports of having disagreements over the facebook relationship status was associated

with lower level of females’ but not males’ relationship satisfaction. Results from this study

encourage continued examination of technology use and behaviors in contexts of intimate

relationship.

Foreign

According to McWilliams and Barrette (2012) Rising numbers of single middle-aged and

older adults encouraged a proliferation of online dating websites. However, few studies examine

aging adults’ involvement in online dating. This study examine how aspects of their online

expectations and experiences are shaped by age and gender. Analyses reveal that men’s seek

committed relationship whereas women’s desire companionship without demanding caring roles

and face narrow social networks.

Malt (2007) This research was inspired by two stereotypes: First, older adults don’t do

computers and don’t do sex, they are asexual. The sample consisted of older adults who had all

used the internet to meet potential romantic partners through their online discussion groups or via

online dating. A proportion enjoyed flirting online with others and committed relationships was

just as compelling an activity for these older adults as for younger internet users.

Underwood and Findlay(2012) This study explored the formation of romantic relationships on

their internet, nature and their possible impact on existing marital relationships. Most reported,

more satisfaction with their online relationship than with their face-to-face one, though few said

that it was more important to them than their primary relationship. Those participants reported

concealing the truth about the time or nature of their activities.

Conclusions

The Researchers conclude that the discourse in social media, can create a deeper relationship
between two people. As it builds up trust and love without regarding or criticizing someone's physical
appearance. However, there could also be negative effects, since it's online relationship, both of them
haven't met each other there is no assurance of the person's identity and may put the other one in danger.

Recommendations

This research did not tackle the effects of social media in a person's behaviour. So the
Researchers recommend that the future researchers may discuss this study.
