Fig 01- Moragahakanda power plant.

The Moragahakanda Dam, officially called as Kulasinghe Reservoir which is a large gravity dam,
and the main component of the larger and more complex Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Project,
currently under construction across the Amban River at Elahera, in the Matale District of Sri
Lanka. In here construction began on 25 January 2007.

The Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Development Project which is a major component of Mahaweli

Master Plan has been progressing steadily and it is to improve irrigation facilities to existing
water scarce farmlands and most importantly open up new land for agriculture development in
Northern, North Central, Eastern and North Western provinces. The Project will generate 25MW
hydro-power to the national grid. Increasing inland fish production, provision of potable and
industrial water requirements, Eco tourism and effective flood control are the other targets of the
project.

Sino-Hydro Corporation of China has undertaken the construction work of Moragahakanda

reservoir Main Dam and Saddle Dam-1 including 25MW Hydro Power generating unit. The
contractor has completed preliminary works such as contactor’s office complex, workshop,
Bayley Bridge over Amban Ganga, concrete batching plant, quarry production plant and
necessary equipment and machines. Construction work of Saddle dam -1combined with hydro
Power generating units and river diversion canal are in progress. The preliminary works related to
Moragahakanda main dam such as survey, land clearance and geological surveying have been
completed and foundation excavation is in progress. The Saddle Dam 2 of Moragahakanda
reservoir was completed using local funds. The project has paid special attention to minimize the
impact on environment.

By this power plant can serve Rs. Million 1545 in yearly. The project will irrigate 82,000 hectares
of existing dry land and another 5.000 hectares of new land. Annual inland fishing will rise by
another 4,500 metric tons. Altogether, nearly 132,000 families will directly benefit from the
project. And also it almost develops Sri Lanka’s tourism.
In this power plant use four Generators to provide power. Such as G1A, G1B, G2, G3. Using
these generators, it produces 25MW electricity power.
MAINTENANCE OF THE POWER PLANT.

Generally, maintenance is the work of keeping something in proper condition, care or upkeep
including taking steps to avoid something breaking down and bringing something back to
working order. There are 3 types of maintenance in this power plant. Such as,

a) Corrective Maintenance Procedures of the Power Plant.

b) Preventive Maintenance Procedures of the Power Plant.
c) Predictive Maintenance Procedures of the Power Plant.

a) Corrective Maintenance Procedures of the Power Plant.

Corrective maintenance is a maintenance task performed to identify, isolate, and rectify a fault so
that the failed equipment, machine, or system can be restored to an operational condition within
the tolerances or limits established for in-service operations.

b) Preventive Maintenance Procedures of the Power Plant.

Preventive maintenance is maintenance that is regularly performed on a piece of equipment to

lessen the likelihood of it failing. It is performed while the equipment is still working so that it
does not break down unexpectedly.

c) Predictive Maintenance Procedures of the Power Plant.

Predictive maintenance techniques are designed to help determine the condition of in-service
equipment in order to estimate when maintenance should be performed. This approach promises
cost savings over routine or time-based preventive maintenance, because tasks are performed only
when warranted.
EXAMPLES.

 TURBINE.

In hydro power plants hydraulic turbine is an important component and it has many associate
problems which degrade its condition and efficiency and require proper operation
and maintenance. So proper operating of hydro power plants with time is very important factor
for achieving higher efficiency of hydro turbines. In here there are several kind of preventive
maintenance. Such as,

a. Applying anti-erosion coating to the runner.

b. Nondestructive test for metal parts.
c. Inspection of labyrinth seals in case of reaction turbines.
d. Painting of runner housing with anticorrosive/tar based paints.
e. Replace the damaged gaskets or seals with new ones.

 GENERATOR.

a. Checking the vibration of generator periodically.

b. Periodic checking of the foundation of the generator.
c. Periodic cleaning or replacement of the generator’s air coolers and bearing oil
coolers.
d. Primary and secondary testing of the protection system for healthiness and correct
operation of the generator.
e. Inspection of the current transformers and bus bars of the generator for
overheating, temperature rise and vibration.

 TRANSFORMER.

a. Continues monitoring of oil and winding temperature.

b. Periodic oil filtration.
c. Oil testing for various tests.
d. Cleaning and replacement of oil cooler.
e. Testing protection system for healthiness.
f. Test for operation time of the breaker.
g. Periodic cleaning of transformer bushing and insulator strings.

 PENSTOCK.

a. Concrete resurfacing for the penstock walls.

b. Pumping out and draining of tunnels and shafts.
c. Crack treatment by injection, bridging, sealing.
d. Renovation of internal coating.
