Running head: Standards of Practice Self-Assessment Assignment

Five Areas of Dental Hygiene Practice Where I Do Not Meet the Standards in Self-
Assessment:

1. I provide information about oral health and access to oral health care for clients, other
professionals and the public.

Learning goal: I will continue to learn about oral health and access to oral health care, to
be able to provide relevant information by referring to textbooks, online resources, and
journals. Taking in consideration things like people’s socioeconomic status, religious or
cultural beliefs, financial status, and current trends will help us better recognize possible
barriers for our patients and how we can be of assistance in concern to oral health and
access to oral health care.

2. I meet the requirements of the CDHO Quality Assurance Program.

Learning goal: I will refer to the Requirements of the Quality Assurance Program and
Guidelines for Continuing Competency from the CDHO website, and review it carefully
to learn more about what the program entails. To be better familiarized with these things
sooner rather than later, would be of greatly beneficial for me in the future when I
become a practicing registered dental hygienist, as I would be able to stay on top of my
learnings and would always find other ways to improve myself as a dental health care
provider.

3. I demonstrate a commitment to the profession through community service activities and

affiliations with professional organizations.

Learning goal: I will continue on learning the different roles of various healthcare
providers and their scope of practice to better understand the needs of our patients/clients
on improving their general health and dental health. By doing so, I would be able to
collaborate well with other health professionals in coming up with a care plan for my

patients/clients, learn about considerations and contraindications to treatment, and

provide oral hygiene counselling based on their needs.

4. I ensure that emergency medical equipment, supplies and drugs are current, stored
according to manufacturers’ directions and readily accessible for use in a medical
emergency.

Learning goal: I will learn more about equipment service records, keeping logs of
supplies and drugs as ICM in clinic. I will also refer to the CDHO registrant’s handbook
to know the importance of keeping records of the things mentioned above, as well as to
know what is expected of me to perform daily. Thus, I will be able to apply it as a student
and as a future registered dental hygienist.

5. I collaborate with other health professionals or knowledge experts in the collection and/or
analysis of client data.

Learning goal: I will review medical conditions I learned in Anatomy and Physiology,
Microbiology, and Human Pathophysiology. I will have CDHO fact sheets readily
available for me to refer to when needed, so I can follow the proper guidelines, learn
more about dental hygiene considerations, contraindications to treatment, oral
implication, and oral management. Our Interprofessional Education class has helped me a
lot in understanding the different scope of practice of other health care providers. It has
made me feel that I can be more involved in early diagnosis and treatment of specific
medical conditions that my clients may present with.

As I finish this self-assessment, I recognized that I should participate fully in

quality assurance programs, and that I would be more responsible for my own learning to
improve my knowledge, therefore I can make sure that I am providing my clients the
most accurate and current information or knowledge in regards to oral health prevention
and promotion. From here on, I will be committed to the profession by engaging myself
in community service activities and affiliations with other professional organizations by
attending lectures and seminars, and participating in community outreach programs so I
can share information and advocate for oral health and how to achieve optimal oral health
and general health with other health care providers. It is very important that I collaborate
with other professional healthcare providers to learn how to better create client-centered
care plans, when or when not to proceed with dental hygiene treatment, and other
measures that should be taken to ensure clients’ health and safety.

In regards to ensuring that I work in an ideal practice environment, I will work

with everyone in the dental team to make sure that we are following the best practice
guidelines for maintaining equipment, supplies and drugs needed for emergency
procedures and day-to-day procedures. In possible cases that a confusion may arise, we
will refer to PIDAC, CDHO, RCDSO guidelines and follow what is required for dental
practices to continue on with regular, day to day, routine services and procedures.

It is our duty to know and understand the DH Standards of Practice and apply
them to our everyday work or clinical experience. We must learn how to work and make
professional decision in our own discretion, but always considering the health and safety
of the public and the possible repercussions of our actions. Dental health professionals
have roles and responsibilities as clinical therapists, oral health educators, and health
promoters to the general public by providing services, educating, and promoting good
oral health. As clinical therapists, dental hygienists are expected to provide primary,
interceptive, therapeutic, preventive, and ongoing care procedures that help to enable
people to achieve optimal oral health. Being oral health educators, dental hygienists
should be able to apply teaching and learning principles to help the development of
specific attitudes, knowledge, skills, and behaviors with particular emphasis on oral

health and its relationship to general health. And as a health promoter, to be able to help
people improve their overall health.
