Government Surveillance: For safety or a Limited freedom

“We are rapidly entering the age of no privacy. Where everyone is open to surveillance at all
times; where there are no secrets from the government.”

-William O. Douglas

Crimes are ineluctable ailment that alters with the development of our society. However,
there are ways to overthrow it. At present time, an effective surveillance from the government is
one of the most popular schemes. Some suggests that a society which provides high secured
surveillance camera and recorders all over the country will results to a better and a safer world.
On the contrary, there are people who say that this idea is somehow unfair as it infringe the
human rights of a person. It diminishes the number of crimes as well as it limits the freedom of
the people. The question is do we want to live in this kind of society? Where every action is
being recorded?

There are three methods of collecting information in order to maintain the safety of the
people according to Marc Thiessen from The Washington Post; the first one is to interrogate the
subjects, the second is to infiltrate the opposition group and lastly, the easiest and efficient way is
to establish intelligence resources to supervise communication. It would probably lessen the
possibility of international terrorism and the rapid increasing of cybercrimes.

Physically, this surveillance does not cause harm to people because it is only design to
track crimes although it would invade the privacy of everyone even the innocent one. It also acts
as a threat to would – be criminals. The main goal of this is to stop the criminal activities before
it starts. This does not limit the people who are affected by this surveillance, even those who are
high in status like the ambassadors and other powerful people. An accurate account of the events
is also offered by this scheme. It would increase the probability of a fair justice system to
everyone because of the real time and accurate evidences that this surveillance can provide.
