TITLE: MEASUREMENT OF GRAIN SIZE Rev. No. & Date: 00 &
01.08.2019
Page No. : 1 of 1

1. PURPOSE: To determine & assess the grain size in rolled product by comparison with standard photographs
given in respective standards.
2. SCOPE: Grain Size in rolled steel
3. RESPONSBILITY: Engineer
4. ACTIVITY:
4.1 Equipment used: Cut-Off Machine, Muffle furnace, Pedestal Grinder, Polishing and lapping machine,
Hot mounting press and microscope.
4.2 Sample preparation:

a. Cut the sample in 10*10*10mm^3 and grind the surface in transverse direction.
b. For low carbon (<0.25 %C) heat the sample at 920+/-15°C in a closed box packed with 70% charcoal
and 30% Barium Carbonate for the periods of 8 hrs soaking time. Furnace cooling up to 723°C then
normal cooling in the open environment.
c. For Carbon 0.25 to 0.60 %heat the sample at 850+/-15°Cfor the periods of 1 hrs soaking time and
quench the sample in water.
d. If required sample shall be hot mounted.
e. Grind the sample in longitudinal direction on zircon- 60 grit size polishing paper.
f. Polish the sample on emery paper of size 1200 followed by 180,220,400,600 and 1000.
g. Carry out the final polishing on cloth with diamond paste lapping compound along with Hifin fluid
spray.
h. Clean the polished sample by running water, soap acetone/ methanol and also dry the sample with air
drier.
i. Etch the polished sample with 5% nital solution and 5% picric acid for case ‘b’ and ‘c’ respectively.

4.3 Evaluation of inclusion rating:

a. Examine the entire polished surface at 100X magnification.
b. Check the requirement as per customer specification.
c. Evaluate and compare the sample grain size with respectivestandards also records the readings.
4.4 Precautions:
a. Sample shall be cut under coolant to avoid the burning that will alter the grain structure.
b. While final polishing i.e. after Carburizing or Oxidation methods (for Grain size determination), care
shall be taken so, as not to remove either carburized or oxidized layer respectively.
c. Polished surface should be free from any pitting or contamination (polishing media).
4.5 Sample Preservation:Preserved for three month or for Agreed terms with the customers.
a. Acceptance Standards: If customer’s specification not available then the acceptance norm shall be as
per ASTM E-112.
5. RECORDS:F04-HT-01(Register).
