1. Course Description:
Measurement. Motion along a straight line. Vectors. Motion in 2 and 3 dimensions. Force and motion. Kinetic
energy and work. Potential energy and conservation of energy. Center of mass and rotation. Center of mass
and linear momentum. Torque and angular momentum. Equilibrium and elasticity. Gravitation. Fluids.
Oscillations. Waves. First and second law of thermodynamics. Electric charge. Electric field. Gauss's law.
Electric potential. Capacitance. Current and resistance. Circuits. Magnetic fields. Magnetic fields due to
currents. Induction and inductance. Electromagnetic oscillations and alternating current. Maxwell's equations.

2. Course Objectives:
• The main objective of this course is to develop an understanding of physical processes which govern the
nature.
• Special emphasis is given to certain key branches in physics like mechanics, electromagnetism, and
material/energy properties in a given environment.
• This constructs for students a firm base for the upcoming courses in future semesters.

3. Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
LO1: understand theory and solve numerical problem related to mechanics.
LO2: understand theory and solve numerical problems related to thermodynamics.
LO3: understand theory and solve numerical problems related to electromagnetic theory.

01 Introduction to physics leading to fundamental and derived physical quantities plus mathematical
operations with vectors leading to vector mechanics.
02 Introduction to mechanics and its branches plus discussion over graphical analysis of kinematics.
03 Discussion over dynamics and analysis of fundamental forces and their unification.
04 Newton’s laws of motion in 1-D and 2-D and construction of mathematical background for description of
natural behavior.
05 Introduction to work-energy theorem and an in depth analysis for mutual relationship among work, energy
and power.
06 Discussion over laws of conservation and their relevance with applications in areas of physics.
07 Introduction to angular motion and related mathematical base to solve problems plus moment of inertia and
its applications.
08 Introduction to laws related to gravitation.
09 Introduction to first law and 2nd law of thermodynamics
10 Introduction to electrostatics and its application with mathematical background.
11 Description of wave and it’s propagation in various media plus its types.
12 Introduction to unification of electricity and magnetism leading to electromagnetic theory.
13 Introduction to theories related to light and its behavior plus a critical analysis under extreme conditions.
14 Learning the phenomena like interference of light waves and how diffraction patterns occur.
15 Discussion over fluid mechanics and some quantum mechanical aspects.

7. Expected Class Conduct:


• Students are supposed to be regular and punctual in the class
• Maximum 5 minutes late will be allowed in the class and students will be marked late for it.
• Students would not be allowed to go outside during the class
• No cell phone will be allowed during the class
• A fixed time and duration of break will be specified, those students who will come late after the break
will be marked late for that class
