Applications are invited online for the admission to the Ph.D. Program for the Academic Year 2019-2020 starting
from January 2020.

1. Minimum Eligibility Criteria


1.1. General Eligibility Criteria for Engineering Streams1
1.1.1. For General/OBC(NCL)/EWS Categories
1. Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks
in aggregate
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 6.0 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 6.0 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.

2. B. Tech/M. Sc in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree with a minimum of 70% marks in


aggregate
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 7.0 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.
AND
Additional requirements as listed in Annexure 1 below.

1.1.2. For SC/ST/PwD


1. Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree with a minimum of 55% marks
in aggregate.
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 5.5 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 5.5 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.

2. B. Tech/M. Sc in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree with a minimum of 65% marks in


aggregate.
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 6.5 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.
AND
Additional requirements as listed in Annexure 1 below.

1.1.3. For IIT B.Tech. and M.Tech. degree holders


Candidates having a last qualifying degree (i.e. B.Tech. or M.Tech. degree) from IITs with a
CGPA/CPI score of 8 on a scale of 10 and above may be admitted to the Ph.D. program under
TA or TAP positions through written test and/or interview.

1.2.1. For GEN/OBC(NCL)/EWS
Master’s Degree in Science or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate.

A minimum CGPA/CPI of 6.0 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 6.0 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.

1.2.2. For SC/ST/PwD


Master’s Degree in Science or equivalent degree with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 5.5 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 5.5 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.

Please note that, School of Physical Sciences (Physics) limited its admission to students who
are externally funded, i.e. students with UGC, CSIR or INSPIRE qualification.

1.3. General Eligibility Criteria for Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Stream3
1.3.1. For GEN/OBC(NCL)/EWS
Master’s Degree in Arts or equivalent degree in allied subjects with a minimum of 60% marks in
aggregate
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 6.0 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 6.0 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.

1.3.2. For SC/ST/PwD


Master’s Degree in Arts or equivalent degree in allied subjects with a minimum of 55% marks in
aggregate
OR
A minimum CGPA/CPI of 5.5 on a scale of 10 or an equivalent to 5.5 on other corresponding
proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10.

1.4. Annexure 1
Candidates eligible in sections 1.1.1(2), 1.1.2(2), I.2, and I.3 must fulfil ONE of the following additional
requirements

1. Valid GATE Score in the relevant streams.


2. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM/ DBT/ ICAR/ ICMR/ ICPR or DST
INSPIRE Fellowship in the relevant streams.
3. Candidates having UGC-NET Lectureship (LS) or M.Phil. in relevant discipline are also
eligible for Teaching Assistantship in addition to other academic qualifications in the
Humanities & Social Sciences stream. Candidates with exceptional academic record without

UGC-NET will also be considered based on their score in the written test and interview
conducted by the SHSS.
4. Minimum of 2 years of professional experience (acquired after obtaining the qualifying degree
and completed before the starting of the semester in which admission is sought) in the
relevant areas. This criterion is only applicable for 1.1.1(2) and 1.1.2(2) given above.
5. School of Electrical Sciences and Mechanical Sciences offer TA through Project (TAP)
category based on their availability. The eligibility criteria for TAP category is same is that of
TA category. The duration of funding for a TAP category Ph.D. student is for a minimum of 3
years and only till the tenure of the project. The applicant must submit an undertaking for self-
finance for the period after the project funding.

2.5.1.2. High Reynolds number flows, Radiative heat transfer, Atmospheric boundary layer
2.5.1.3. Characterization of novel fuels and oxidizers (propellants) for aerospace applications:
This project would involve creating rocket propellants using novel methods/ materials,
measuring the burning rates at various pressures using high-speed videography, and
comparison with suitable models.
2.5.1.4. An investigation into the combustion kinetics and aging characteristics of energetic
materials:
Energetic materials include fuels, pyrotechnics, explosives, and propellants. This project
would use thermal analysis techniques such as DSC and TGA to understand the kinetics of
combustion for a range of energetic materials. The thermal and hygrothermal aging of these
materials will also be studied experimentally as well as numerically.
2.5.1.5. A study on combustion-originated particulates:
The examples include soot generated by gaseous or liquid fuels, emissions from coal or
biomass combustion, and nanoparticle synthesized using flames. Here, appropriate
investigations would be taken up after zeroing in on a specific problem. The project may aim
to investigate the generation mechanism, synthesis of nano-particles using flames,
characteristics, and novel application of these particulates. Physical characterization of
particulate material from combustion sources will be investigated.
2.5.1.6. Modelling muco-ciliary clearance:
The flow of viscoelastic fluids is ubiquitous in nature and industry. The goal of this project is to
model viscoelastic fluids and simulate muco-ciliary clearance in human lungs. Apart from
biological applications, viscoelastic flows are widely used in polymer processing industry.
2.5.1.7. Role of radiative effects of aerosol particles on convection:
Radiative energy transfer through participating media that can absorb, emit and scatter
radiation is important in wide range of fields such as furnaces, rocket propulsion, glass
manufacturing and the earth atmosphere. This project aims at numerically studying the
radiative effects of aerosol particles on convective heat transfer.
2.5.2. Mechanical Design
2.5.2.1. Study of shock wave propagation in layered medium with application to ballistic armors:
The objective of this project is to develop a constitutive model for layered medium for shock
dominated applications and design a ceramic-composite configuration for Indian armors. This
subject may involve experimental validations, but foremost focus would be on computational
stuff.
2.5.2.2. Multiscale modeling of composite materials:
This work focuses on development of multiscale methods for heterogenous materials i.e. fiber
reinforced composites which captures the nonlinear behavior caused by failure and inelasticity
of micro constituents. Various analytical, numerical and mathematical homogenization
methods would be studied to find out a computationally efficient multiscale modeling technique
for a multi-phase material.
2.5.2.3. Mechanical modelling of biological cells:
In this project, we will model the mechanics of biological cells using slender elements such as
bars, beams, membranes, and shells. These models can be used for estimating the biological
properties of single cells from mechanical measurements.
2.5.2.4. Manipulating single cells using micro-mechanisms:
Microfabricated, compliant, micro-mechanisms are excellent tools for manipulating micro-
sized objects. Multiple modes of manipulations can be achieved by using the various compliant
mechanisms design techniques. In this project we will develop such mechanisms for
manipulating single cells in a variety of ways.
2.5.2.5. Study of micro-architectured composites for enhanced mechanical properties:
Architectured composites are designed using different architectures as building blocks to
realize composite materials/structures at meso/macro scales. The (micro) architectures of the
building blocks are chosen to achieve the desired performance of the composite. This project
is to study the mechanical properties of different architectured composites. The scope includes
design, simulation and 3D printing of different architectured composites and evaluation of their
properties. The student should be interested in Solid Mechanics, Experiments and CAD/Finite
Element Analysis.
2.5.2.6. Fiber reinforced composites for marine applications:
Composites are being increasingly used in several structural components and are candidate
materials with a potential to replace metals. Marine composites are subjected to different
environmental conditions due to saline water and underwater pressure. Composites with
suitable properties can replace wood structures and may yield better durability and
performance. The project aims to investigate the mechanics of marine composites through
multi-scale experimential techniques and modeling. The scope includes experimentation and
numerical simulations of the composites. The student should be interested in Solid Mechanics,
Experiments and CAD/Finite Element Analysis.
2.5.3. Reliability
2.5.3.1. Predictive maintenance of Critical equipment using AI:
Reliability, Condition Monitoring, Data acquisition/ Real-time data collection, Use of AI tools
and techniques, Optimization techniques. Applications areas --- maritime systems, renewable
energy devices, complex equipment in medicine industrial process etc.,
2.5.3.2. Reliability testing:
Reliability, life-testing methods, Optimization techniques. Application areas Electronics
system, Mechanical systems, Mechatronics systems.

6. Candidates are required to fill details as given in the form and save the form.
7. Candidates are required to upload the recent Passport Photograph (Maximum 200KB),
scanned copy of Signature (Maximum 12KB), detailed CV, and Marksheets as per eligibility
(Maximum 400KB). The CV should mention the projects completed (bachelors and masters)
and awards/recognition you received.
8. The system will not allow you to Submit the application without filling payment details.
