Literacy Center:
The Play-Doh and dough literacy mats are for students to practice creating their letters. This is a
fun and unique way for them to explore the structure of the alphabet. Each mat also gives an
example sentence and word using that specific letter. The Alphabet Match Game is another way
for students to practice their letters. This matching game gives students pictures to associate the
letters with and provides both uppercase and lowercase letters to aid in letter association. The
Rhyming Puzzles enforce the rime (or word families) of many sets of words. Pictures also aid in
helping the students to decode the words. The Fishing for Sight Words Game is a fun and
interactive way for students to learn their sight words. The magnetic letters and whiteboards will
help students begin to spell out letters and sentences for themselves, as well as the sentence
strips. Each of these activities correlate directly with certain Kindergarten TEKS.
TEKS for the Literacy Center:
K.2.(A)(i): Demonstrate phonological awareness by identifying and producing rhyming words.
K.2.(B)(i): Demonstrate and apply phonic knowledge by identifying and matching the common
sounds that letters represent.
K.2.(B)(iv): Demonstrate and apply phonic knowledge by identifying and reading at least 25
high frequency words from a research- based list.
K.2(D)(v): Demonstrate print awareness by identifying all uppercase and lowercase letters.
K.2(E): Develop handwriting by accurately forming all uppercase and lowercase letters using
appropriate directionality.

Math/Science/Discovery Center
The life cycle manipulatives will allow students to have a hands-on experience with the life
cycles of certain animals. The magnifying glasses give students the opportunity to look at things
up close and to model the scientific process by observing data. Seashells can be used to give
students real life objects to observe and sort. The number match cards provide students with a
pictorial representation to match numeric terms. The play money allows students to count and
identify the different coins by name. The 3-D shapes give students the opportunity to hold and
use the 3 dimensional concepts they are learning about. The balance will aid students in the data
collection of the scientific process. Finally, the 5 senses matching game helps students to identify
the 5 senses through the use of pictures and examples. Each of these activities relate directly to
Kindergarten TEKS.
TEKS for Math/ Science:
Math:
K.2.(A): Count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects.
K.2.(B): Read, write, and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects
or pictures.
K.6(B): Identify three-dimensional solids, including cylinders, triangles, cones, spheres, and
cubes.
K.8(A): Collect, sort, and organize data into two or three categories.
K(4): The student is expected to identify U.S. coins by name, including pennies, nickels, dimes,
and quarters.

Science:
K.4.(A) Collect information using tools, including computing devices, hand lenses, primary
balances, bowls, magnets, collecting nets, and notebooks.
K.9.(A): Differentiate between living and nonliving things based upon whether they have basic
needs and produce offspring.
K.10 (B): Identify basic parts of plants and animals.

Health:
K.4(A): Name the five senses.

Art/Music Center:
The Play-Doh and Play-Doh tools allow students to express themselves through sculpting and
creating. The tools also allow for fine motor development. The foam craft noodles can also be
used to create shapes and model things from students’ imaginations. The rhythm set and drums
help students gain a knowledge of rhythm, tone, and beat. There are also many different
instruments for the students to use, such as maracas, a triangle, and bells, so that each person can
play with what appeals to them. There is also a sing-along CD that can be utilized during
independent work time, or as a dance break when students need to move. All of these materials
relate directly to Kindergarten TEKS.
TEKS for Art/ Music:
Art:
K.2(A): Create artworks using a variety of lines, shapes, colors, textures, and forms.
K.2(C): Use a variety of materials to develop manipulative skills while engaging in opportunities
for exploration through drawing, painting, printmaking, constructing artworks, and sculpting,
including modeled forms.
Music:
K.1(E): Identify beat, rhythm, and simple two-tone and three-tone melodies using iconic
representation.
K.2(A): Sing or play classroom instruments independently or in groups.
K.2(E Perform music using louder/softer and faster/slower.
K.3(A): Sing songs and play musical games, including rhymes, folk music, and seasonal music.

Dramatic Play Center:

The play food set with help children to identify healthy food choices and how to pretend cook.
The dish set and housekeeping set allows children to take on the role of “Mom” or “Dad” when
the students play house or family. The three different baby dolls and doll accessories teach
children how to be nurturing and caring to another human. I chose three different ethnicities of
baby dolls so that every child can feel represented. The career costumes allow students to see the
real life applications of jobs such as a firefighter or a nurse. Children can also role play using
these costumes or learn how these important jobs contribute to the well-being of our society. The
doctor kit and construction kit can be used as props for the career costumes. Some of these
activities relate directly to Kindergarten TEKS.

Social Studies TEKS:

K.7(A & B): Identify jobs in the home, school, and community and explain why people have
jobs.
K.9(A & B): Identify authority figures in the home, school, and community, and explain how
authority figures make and enforce rules.

Health TEKS:
K.1(B): Identify types of foods that help the body grow such as healthy breakfast foods and
snacks.
K.3(B): Plan a healthy meal and/or snack.

Motor Skills Center:

The Playstix, Straws, and Legos all aid in the development of fine motor skills. Plus, children are
learning how to build and support structures so that they do not tip over. All three of these
activities can reinforce creative thinking and allow the student to determine their own reasoning
behind why certain structures hold up and others do not. The mini bowling set and bean bag toss
enforce gross motor skills. The bean bag toss can also help students learn colors and shapes, due
to the design of the activity.

Extra Materials:
The carpet squares are for use in various centers when seating may not be available. This is to
ensure that students can be comfortable, even when sitting on the floor. The lap-top trays have a
similar use. These are for when students want to do an activity in a center, but a table may not be
available. This way, their specific activity can be contained to them and others are not disrupting
their creativity. The pillows are for the Literacy Center, so students can feel comfy when sitting
down to read or write independently.
