1st Semester Final Exam Study Guide
SOCCER

 When a member of the defending team causes the ball to go over the goal line, the result is a Corner Kick.

 When a player is kicking a direct or indirect kick, opposing players must remain at least ten yards from the ball
until it is in play. This is called a Free Kick.

 A Direct Kick is a kick in which a goal can be scored directly against the opposing team.

 When a ball is passed to a player and he/she is on his/her own offensive half of the field, he/she must have at least
1 opposing player nearer to the goal or it is Off-Sides.

 After making a save, the goalie may choose to Punt the ball. The ball must be dropped from the goalie’s hands.

 When a member of the offensive team causes the ball to go over the goal line, the result is a Goal Kick.

 The means of putting the ball back in play after the ball has gone over the sideline is with a Throw-in.

 An Indirect Kick is a kick from which a goal cannot be scored until it has been touched by another player

 A direct kick awarded to one team when a player on the opposing team commits a major foul within the penalty
area is referred to as a Penalty Kick.

 At the time of kick-off, all players must be on their defensive side of the field.

 A player purposely touches a ball with his/her hands, and the person is not the goalie, the infraction may result in
a free kick or a penalty kick.

 A person may use their head to score a goal.

 The penalty kick is taken inside the penalty area or 12 yards from goal.

 A legal throw-in requires the person to have two hands on the ball, two feet on the ground, and the ball must be
released over the head.

 The goalie may only use his or her hands while in the penalty area.

 There are no time outs are awarded to each team in soccer.

 Soccer is played on a rectangular field that is 80-120 yards long.

 The small box immediately in front of each goal is called the Goal box.

 There are 11 players on the field for each team in an official soccer game.

 The game starts at the midfield with a Kickoff.

 The individuals that are usually considered attacking offensive players are the Forwards.

 A standard formation in soccer is 4-4-2. 1 Goalie, 4 Defenders, 4 Midfielders, 2 Forwards

 Goalies are allowed to throw the ball, punt the ball, or Kick the ball within the penalty box.

 A varsity soccer high school game consists of two, 40 minute halves.

FOOTBALL

 Touchdown-6 points awarded when a team crosses the goal line with possession of the football.
 Safety-2 points awarded to the defensive team when the ball carrier is downed in between the goal line
and the end line.
 Center- Snaps the ball to the quarterback.
 Goal line- Crossing this line with possession of the football results in a touchdown.
 End Line- This is the line at the back of the end zone, any ball caught past this line is out of bounds.
 Lateral- A ball that is pitched backward from the ball carrier.
 Off sides- When a defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped.
 Line of Scrimmage- A line that is drawn parallel to the football that divides the offense from the
defense.
 The team that has possession of the ball is called the offense.
 An intercepted pass is when a defensive player catches a forward pass thrown by the offense.
 A touchdown is worth 6 points.
 Each offensive play is called a down.
 The end zones are 10 yards long.
 Illegal procedure is when the offensive player moves forward before the ball is snapped.
 The space that is the length of the ball that extends from sideline to sideline is called the neutral zone.
 In football there are three main categories of position
 Offensive Player, Defensive Player, and Special Teams Player
 The two players that line up on either side of the center are known as Guards.
 There are 4 quarters in a regulation game of football.
 The player who throws passes, hands the ball off, and calls the plays is known as the quarterback.
 The player who most often catches passes from the quarterback is known as a receiver.

VOLLEYBALL

 An official high school team consists of 6 players on the court at one time.
 The server may step on or over the end line only after he/she strikes the ball or after the serve is
completed.
 A player may never step over the center line when the ball is in play
 Rally scoring is the scoring method used in class.
 A “dig” in volleyball is when a player slides on the floor to hit the ball up in the air.
 An “ace” is when the ball is served to the other team and no one on the receiving team touches it.
 A player continues to serve until his/her team fails to return the ball or makes an error.
 A “set” should not be executed with one hand.
 A “foot fault” is when the server steps on or over the end line during a serve.
 The underhand serve is the easiest serve to learn but offers the opposition very little difficulty in playing
it.
 Spiking the ball is not legal while attempting to receive a serve.
 Side-out is the term used when the serving team loses the serve.
 When the ball comes to rest on any part of a player’s body, it is referred to as a lift.
 A hard, one-handed hit above the height of the net that terminates play is referred as a “kill”.
 A team may contact the ball four times if the first contact is a block.
 A side out shall be called if a player on the serving team plays the ball illegally
 A dink should be used if the ball is close to the net and too low to spike.
 The height of the net is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches high for men’s volleyball and 7 feet 4 1/8 inches for
women’s games.
 _ It is illegal for a player on the receiving team to catch the ball and call it out.
 _ The ball may be played off the net during a volley.

FLOOR HOCKEY

 A shot or effort to score a goal using the wrist to flick the puck is called a wrist shot.

 The player that is allowed anywhere on the floor is called the center.

 The penalty received for high sticking is 2 minutes.

 The area around the goal that only the goalie may enter is called the crease.

 Floor hockey emphasizes cardiovascular activity, stick handling, passing and shooting skills.

 The Forwards are not allowed anywhere on the floor.

 After every goal there is a face-off at center court.

 If the hockey puck is above a player’s waist, the player may block it or catch and release it with his/her
hand.

 After catching or picking up the puck, the goalie must release it to the right or left. The goalie may not
throw the puck vertically down the floor.

 An offensive player is not allowed in the goal crease to score a goal.

 High sticking is never allowed, even if no other players are nearby.

 A player may briefly step on the puck to stop or regain control of it.

 A face-off begins each game and is used after each goal.

 There are a total of 6 players on each team including the goalie.

 High sticking takes place when the blade of the stick is raised above the waist at any time.
