Basilica of Sant'Andrea, Mantua

- Important feature was the correspondence between the façade and the interior elevation both
elaborations of the Triumphal Arch Motif
3. Façade
-it is defined by a large central arch, flanked by Corinthian pilaster
- the height of façade equals its width
- based on the scheme of the ancient arch of titus

–the façade pilasters continue through three stories “The Giant Orders”

- It is largely a brick structure with hardened stucco


- The whole is surmounted by a pediment and above that is a vaulted structure

INTERIOR

- The interior of the cathedral boasts a rounded barrel-vaulted dome which is covered with
frescoes.
- Filippo Juvarra was the actual builder of the dome and details .

- the first chapel to the left is the resting place of the artist Mantegna in his funeral Chapel.

- he was buried here when he died in 1506.

-within the chapel there is a bronze figure of him.

The church has a single nave without side aisles while three vaulted chapel are on each side of the nave ,
the cross is marked by a dome.

-The walls are decorated with Frescoes

- the nave of the interior is roofed by a barrel vault
