1) Introduction

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) automatically switches off electrical circuit during an abnormal
condition of the network means in overload condition as well as faulty condition.

Nowadays we use an MCB in low voltage electrical network instead of a fuse. The fuse may not
sense it but the miniature circuit breaker does it in a more reliable way. MCB is much more
sensitive to overcurrent than fuse.

Handling an MCB is electrically safer than a fuse. Quick restoration of supply is possible in case
of a fuse as because fuses must be re-wire able or replaced for restoring the supply. Restoration is
easily possible by just switching it ON.

2) Uses of MCB

1. Home electrical appliance - the miniature circuit breaker is designed to protect the house from
circuit overload. The breaker can manage the flow of energy, distributing properly the voltage
even when many devices run off the same power circuit.

2. Lights - Using miniature circuit breakers in the lighting system of the house, because they can
deal with the amount of power needed to light a house

3. Industrial application -There are many small-scale industrial buildings that use the miniature
circuit breakers instead of the old fuses. These installations require up to 30 kA capacity, therefore
the miniature breakers are ideal for this type of applications and devices

3) Types of MCB

MCBs are classified into three major types according to their instantaneous tripping currents. They
are

Type B MCB

Type C MCB

Type D MCB

Type B MCB

This type of MCB will trip instantly at a rate of three to five times its rated current. These are
normally used for resistive or small inductive loads where switching surges are very small.
Therefore, these are suitable for residential or light commercial installations.

Type C MCB

This type of MCB will trip instantly at a rate of five to ten times its rated current. These are
normally used for high inductive loads where switching surges are high such as small motors and
florescent lighting. In such cases, type C MCBs are preferred to handle higher value of short circuit
currents. Therefore, these are suitable for highly inductive commercial and industrial installations.

Type D MCB

This type of MCB will trip instantly at a rate of ten to twenty five times its rated current. These
are normally used for very high inductive loads where high inrush current are very frequent. These
are suitable for specific industrial and commercial applications. The common examples of such
applications include x-ray machines, UPS systems, industrial welding equipment, large winding
motors, etc.

4) Top Modular Electric Switch Brands in India for Homes (2019)

1. ABB is the leading company in the low-voltage circuit breakers market, offers control room
solutions, communication networks, drives, high-voltage products, low-voltage products and
systems. The company focuses on expanding its high value-add solutions to regions like Asia-
Pacific, Middle East & Africa, Europe, and America. As US and Middle East countries have
witnessed increasing investments in the residential and commercial sector, in the recent years,
these countries are actively involved in the development of high renewable energy generation
projects.

2. Schneider Electric is primarily engaged in a wide range of products to customers in a variety

of industries and customer segments. It focuses on continuous innovation; Schneider Electric has
the capability to bring new technology high-quality products and solutions through research and
development. Moreover, the company has involved in the digital transformation of energy
management and automation in homes, buildings, data centres, infrastructure, and industries.

3. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is one of the global leaders that manufactures, distributes,
and sells electrical and electronic equipment. It provides solutions for industrial automation and
home automation. The company focuses on six business segments such as industrial automation
systems, energy and electric systems, home appliances, information and communication systems,
and electronic devices.

4. Siemens AG Industries operates in the fields of electrification, automation, and digitalization

across the world. The company mainly focuses on products which are used in energy and power
industries. As most of the Asian countries are investing more on power distribution and
renewable energy segments, the company is looking for an opportunity for new contracts to cater
the developing countries such as China, Japan, and India particularly.

5) Porter’s 5 forces:

Porter’s five forces model is an investigation tool that uses five industry forces to determine the
intensity of competition in an industry and its profitability

1) Rivalry among the existing competitors-

The rivalry among the existing player in an this industry is intense noteworthy players in the
low-voltage circuit breakers market include ABB (Switzerland), Schneider Electric (France),
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Japan), Siemens AG (Germany), Eaton Corporation (Ireland),
Shanghai Liangxin Electrical Co., Ltd. (China), DELIXI (China), HangShen Electric (China),
CHINT Group (China), Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co., Ltd. The efforts and strategies
undertaken by these players are outlined to strengthen their core businesses.

2) Threat to new entry –

This force regulates how easy it is to enter industry. New entrants in MCB brings innovation and
new ways of doing things which can create pressure on existing leaders. The entry and exit barriers
are very high due to high cost is required to install technology and to ensure quality product as
uninterrupted power flow is expected from the low-voltage circuit breakers providing company

3) Bargaining power of buyers-

Buyer’s power is huge because they serving end users like manufacturing and process industries,
infrastructure sector and common people. The smaller and more powerful the customer base is
MCB Company the higher the bargaining power of the customers and higher their ability to seek
increasing discounts and offers

4) Bargaining power of supplier- :

Strong bargaining power permits suppliers to sell higher priced or low-quality raw materials to
their buyers. This directly affects the buying firms’ profits as it has to pay more for materials.
Supplier have huge bargaining power because there are many companies in field of MCB which
they can supply.

5) Threats of substitute-

There is very less threat of substitute in the near future because most of the market is captured by
ABB, Schneider in global market and in Havell’s in India because they are providing low cost,
better durability.

6) CURRENT MARKET SCENARIO

The circuit breakers are one of the key contributors for the efficient and reliable power supply.
Growing focus towards efficient transmission and distribution of electricity and sustained demand
from end-user industries is driving the demand for circuit breakers in India. The government
of India has set the target to add power capacity of about 88,536 MW (Mega Watt) during the 12th
year plan, i.e., 2012-17 which in turn has led to the growth of high voltage circuit breaker in high
power transmission and sub-transmission projects.

According to "India Circuit Breakers Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2018", the circuit breakers
market revenues in India are forecasted to grow at the CAGR of around 15% during 2013-18. The
market is currently dominated by low voltage circuit breakers. It is forecasted that MCB and
MCCB will account for more than 30% revenue share by 2018 due to high demand from low
voltage segments. The leading players operating in Indian circuit breakers market are Schneider
Electric, Siemens, L&T and ABB.

7) FUTURE SCOPE:

1.The worldwide market for Miniature-Circuit Breaker is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly
over the next five years, will reach million US$ in 2024, from million US$ in 2019, according to
a new study.

2. Global demand for electricity is rising at an alarming rate owing to factors such as increasing
industrialization and population growth. According the international energy agency, the electricity
consumption worldwide is projected to hit 30,000 terawatt hours by 2030. This would create
substantial opportunities for the adjacent markets such as electrical equipment and protection
devices. Subsequently, with the constant rise in electricity production and consumption, the
demand for MCBs would continue to rise in the following years.

Conclusion-

From the above information we can conclude that there is already more technology available
with great market competition. It is difficult for new entrant to come into the market. Because
they should come with a cost effective new technology to attract customers who are already loyal
to existing one. Suppliers have high bargaining power in this market and also customer have
enough options to buy which increases their bargaining power also. There is low threat of
product substitution because industries already providing at cheaper cost.

Finally there is high future scope because demand of electricity is increasing in Africa and Asian
region. If newcomer comes with reliable technology then they can grab the market.
