MIGRATION AMONG KALANGUYA AT SITIO SALICPAN

Abstract
Migration is an art of finding oneself for betterment and advancement of living. It is
a trend that happens globally and locally. Migration among ethnic groups or marginalized
sectors are more prevalent. This can be manifested among the Kalanguya people which
is a sub-group of Igorot that are situated at Sitio Salicpan, which is an upland remote area
among the eight sitios that composed Barangay Salinas, Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya.
Among these migrants come from the various places in the nearby barangay namely:
Mapayao, Pinayag, Nansiakan, Babaddi, Banao, Acacia, and Pangawan, where 90% of
the population are Kalanguya. These indigenous migrants have various reasons to
consider, such as economic, social, political and physical using the Push and Pull Theory
of Everett Lee as a framework. This paper provides detailed account on the massive
migration among the Kalanguya people using descriptive, comparative and historical
methods. This study utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative research
designs where 30 elder Kalanguya migrants with the age range of 50 and above are
purposively selected at Sitio Salicpan for the interview. The findings on this study revealed
that the main reason of diaspora among these Kalanguya people in chronological order
is social, physical, economic and political. These migrants considered many sub-factors
in migrating from one place to another for their own good and betterment of their
constituents. Thus, migration among Kalanguya people is a manifestation that movement
is a search for better dwelling socially, physically, economically and politically stable.
