Five Causes of Conflict

• Relationship – conflict occurs between individuals when there is an imbalance in recognizing and
providing for the needs or interests of the other party
• Data – lack or misinterpretation of data; e.g. someone quoting research figures that may be
questionable to others
• Interest – driven by needs
• Structural – involve human organizations, social structures, or processes and procedures
• Values – when prioritization of these values varies from one party to another

Family Structures

• Family – basic unit of society

• Nuclear Family – ideal family; consists of two parents and children; having two parents may also
mean two adults earning a living that may ease the financial concerns of the family.
• Single-Parent Family – solo parent raising the children; parent can either be a father or mother;
highly challenging
• Extended Family – comprised of two parents, children, aunts, uncles, grandparents or non-
relatives living together under one roof; For some Filipinos, it is a product of financial difficulties
• Stepfamily – two families being merged together due to marriage of a parent of one family to
another. New family comprised of the husband, wife, and children from previous marriages or
relationships.
• “Adolescents are highly sensitive to changes and their possible resistance to change can be a
challenge to both parents”
• Grandparent – they take on the role of parenting and nurturing the children
• Communication is the key to healthy family relationships.

Career Pathways

• The true purpose of education is service for others

• Career – profession that a person may get into, either because he has found a good match
between his life goals, skills, personality, and interests with a dream job, or it may just be a means
to earn a living

Four Categories of Career Development Theories

• Trait Factor – skills, values, interest, and personality characteristics are analyzed and matched
with job factors or an occupational profile
• Psychological – offshoot of Parson’s Trait Factor; e.g. We often hear a high school student
saying he or she is interested in political science but would also like to design clothes or
experiment on cooking different types of dishes
• Decision – based on Bandura’s Theory of Self-Efficacy; a person may exercise control over his
or her thoughts, beliefs, and actions, and that self-efficacy is the predictor of behavior
• Developmental – humans are always in constant change and go through life learning
