(1) William Kamkwamba is a Malawian innovator, engineer and

writer. He gained fame in his country when, in 2002, he built
a windmill to generate electricity and pump water for his family's house
using trees, bicycle parts, and metal scraps.

(2) William was born in a poor family on August 5th, 1987. His father was a farmer and
his mother was a housewife. The family relied on farming to survive. When famine hit his
village, Kamkwamba dropped out of school because his family couldn’t afford the school
fee. In a desperate attempt to retain his education, Kamkwamba began to frequently visit the
local library where he discovered his true love for electronics and science books. In 2002, he
decided to create his first windmill.

(3) Local farmers and journalists investigated his windmill in November 2006. The Daily
Times newspaper, in the capital, wrote a story on Kamkwamba's
windmill. The story circulated through the international news. «He is
a clever boy who is full of curiosity. He persevered even when people
said he was crazy.» Emeka Okafor, TED conference director,
described him. «Youngsters learn from his story the importance of
hard work and believing in their dreams. »

(4) In 2007, William received a scholarship to the African Leadership Academy in

Johannesburg, South Africa, and then graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New
Hampshire in 2014. He wrote his book, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," in 2013. In
late 2013 The Time Magazine named William one of the "30 People Under 30 Changing The
World.
