RESPIRATION

FUNCTION IS TO
-

PROVIDE OXYGEN
TO TISSUES AND
REMOVE CARBON
DIOXIDE.
FOUR COMPONENTS

—Pulmonary
Ventilation
-the inflow and outflow of
air between the atmosphere
and the lung alveoli.
—Diffusion of oxygen
and carbon dioxide
between alveoli and
the blood;
• Perfusion/Transport
of oxygen and carbon
dioxide in the blood and
body fluids to and from
the body’s tissue cell.
—Regulation of
ventilation and other
facets of respiration.
CORRELATION

— HYPOTHETIC PRE DIAGNOSIS

“ CARBON MONOXIDE
POISONING”
Carbon Monoxide produce toxicity by binding
to Hemoglobin. Thereby, reducing oxygen-carrying
capacity.
LOW OXYGEN LEVELS

HYPOXEMIA
Occurs when level of oxygen in blood are
lower than normal.
Decrease blood oxygen levels = body will
not work properly.
—HYPOXIA
Body is deprived of adequate
oxygen supply in tissues.
COMPENSATORY MECHANISM

¯ Oxygen in the system®

Hyperventilation

HYPERVENTILATION-
In order to compensate the low O2 levels
we need to breathe in O2. Hence, there is
an excessive respiration leading to loss of
CO2.
RESPIRATORY ALKALOSIS

Involves an increase in respiratory rate and

volume.(Hyperventilation)

HYPERVENTILATION occurs
often in response to hypoxia,
metabolic acidosis and increased in
metabolic demands.
