Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
I. Introduction

Skin is the largest organ in our body, in this case, it is our outer physical

appearance. People often judge other people just by their looks, which is why we

have to take care of our skin and our health, we have to keep it moisturized and

hydrated to avoid any skin diseases or problems.

Proper skin care is important because we have the largest infection barrier

in our skin. Holding our skin moist and stable helps to maintain a powerful

barrier. There may be cracks in the skin gets dry and irritated by hard soap. Skin

cracks makes a person more susceptible to infection. Skin care should be free of

scents and perfumes and soaps should be mild and moist.

Proper skin care helps to maintain intact our outermost skin surface layer.

This layer maintains the overall hydration of the skin and serves as our primary pr

otection against the environment, so it is critical to keep it strong and healthy.

For example, harsh cleaners can damage the outer layer by removing essen

tial lipids and moisture. Using a proper skin care scheme every day can help

preserve our most importance outer protective layer.

Background of the Study

As mentioned by Smith (2019) a common effect of excessively dry skin is

weakening of the skin which can lead to cracking or even bleeding, this occurs

Senior High School

STI COLLEGE SAN FERNANDO

because the skin loses elasticity when it lacks moisture and the skin splits more

easily when stretched or put under pressure. Dry skin may rarely be side effect of

certain medications that is why we are facing a serious problem in the populations

of skin care.

This study aims to make a hydrating facial mist which will help to hydrate the

face and enclosed the pores. The hydrating facial mist will energize the skin after

a long tiring day, this facial mist is composed of Rosewater, Aloe Vera, H2O and

Peppermint. The goal of this study is to make an alternative hydrating facial mist

that is purely organic and 100% safe to all skin types.

According to Sentry (2019) there are two main benefits of facial mist sprays –

They can temporarily change the appearance of your skin, and since they are

usually fragranced, they can help you feel good. Some sprays are marketed as

being able to temporarily give you a dewy glow if your skin is feeling dried, and

others are designed by cosmetic companies that may help set or refresh your

makeup. Keep in mind though, that many of the ingredients added to sprays

cannot actually be absorbed by your skin. So, while a mist might set your makeup

or brighten your face for a little while, it is not going to make a lot of physical

improvements to your skin. According to an article from

kateandryanskincare.com (2019) facial mist are very beneficial skin care products

that are rapidly gaining in popularity for good reason. They are an easy and

convenient addition to any skin care routine, Facial mist can be used anywhere to

provide an instant energy boost to lacklustre skin, improve the overall health of

your skin types, all while providing the proven healing benefits of aromatherapy.

Overall, the all-natural and refreshing solutions contribute to a more beautiful,

glowing complexion.

Based on the researcher’s study, the antioxidants of Rosewater hydrating

facial mist protects the skin against damage and it also soothes irritated and dry

skin. The researchers used all-natural ingredients to produce a safe and healthy

facial mist. The Rosewater has an anti-inflammatory properties that can help

reduce the redness of the irritated skin, it also helps to get rid of acne, dermatitis

and eczema, rosewater is a great cleanser for the removal of oil and excess dirt

accumulated in clogged pores. The Aloe Vera moisturizes and heals dry skin in all

designated skin types, it also helps to control lessen the signs of ageing. The

Peppermint gives your skin a cooling effect to be able to relax and to soothe your

mood. This facial mist is not only for moisturizing but it can also be a help to your

makeup to look more natural, after putting on makeups, you can spritz a facial

mist to set your makeup to avoid the cakeyness and creasing of the foundation and

it also maintain your makeup throughout the day.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to help the future researchers and the people that have been

facing the same problem, it will benefit them to know that rose petals can be a

moisturizing mist on face. It will stop the itchiness, redness and any other

symptoms from having a dry skin.

This study also sought to answer the following:

1) How can the rose water hydrating facial mist be describe in terms of

effectiveness in:

a) Hydrating and moisturizing the skin

b) Lasts on the skin

2) Is there a significant difference between the control group and the

experimental group who used the rosewater hydrating facial mist?

III. Hypothesis of the Study

Null Hypothesis – There is no significant difference between the control group

and the experimental group that used the same hydrating mist.

Alternative Hypothesis – There is a significant difference between the control

group and the experimental group that used the same hydrating mist.

IV. Purpose and Significance of the Study

This study aims to help the future researchers and the out-of-the-school youth

to acknowledge the benefit of the rose extract as an effective hydrating facial

mist.

Senior High School

STI COLLEGE SAN FERNANDO

Community – This study aims to help the community with the economically

beneficial facial mist that consists of rose extract that is safe and no harsh

chemicals included.

School – This study aims to be a useful related literature for the future researchers

that will conduct a relevance to this study.

Student – This study aims to help the students to get a useful information and

also as a source of income since the ingredients used in the product are

inexpensive.

STI COLLEGE SAN FERNANDO

To be able to conduct this product, the researchers limit to the use of rose oil

that is extracted from the rose petals, the gel from the aloe vera and the

peppermint oil extracted from the peppermint’s leaf. The researchers used a

cooling tube for the distillation of oils from the Rose petals and the Peppermint

leaves, the researcher’s also needed pots, sifter, measuring cups and stirring rods;

these materials are already in the researcher’s house. Some of the ingredients are

needed to be bought in the local market like the Rose petals, the Peppermint

leaves can be found in the grocery stores, the Aloe Vera can be bought at the local

markets and can also be found in the community. The product must be thoroughly

tested to avoid any negative reaction to the skin of the future consumers. This

study can also be a product as a source of income for the future consumers that

will also produce the product.

Methodology
I. Research Design

In this study, the researchers will use the Quasi-Experimental type of

research which involves the manipulation of an independent variable without the

random assignment of participants to conditions or orders of conditions.

According to the researchers (Price et al. 2018) Quasi-experimental

research eliminates the directionality problem because it involves the

manipulation of the independent variable. It does not eliminate the problem of

cofounding variables, however, because it does not involve random assignment to

conditions.

II. Sampling Procedure

The researchers will be using the Purposive Sampling for this research in

order to test the product.

Purposive Sampling is a non-probability sample that is selected based on

characteristics of a population and the objective of the study. This type of

sampling can be very useful in situations when you need to reach a targeted

sample quickly, and where sampling for proportionality is not the main concern.

(Crossman 2019)

be lower than 25.5 C

VI. Conceptual Framework

In this study, the researchers will use Independent and Dependent

variables (IVDV) chart shown in figure 1. In statistical modelling and

experimental sciences, there are Dependent variables and Independent variables.

The chart investigate how the former depend on the latter. The dependent

variables represent the output or the outcome whose variation is being studied.

The Independent variables represent input or causes, i.e., potential reasons for

variation or the variable being controlled by the experimenter. Experiments test or

determine the effects that the Independent variables have on the Dependent

variables.

IX. Definition of Terms

For better understanding of this study, the following terms are defined

conceptually and operationally.

Elasticity. Elasticity is the ability of a deformed material body to return to its

original shape and size when the forces causing the deformation are removed. A

body with this ability is said to behave (or respond) elastically.

It is slightly pulling the certain part of your skin while pinching it as a grip and

letting it go afterwards

Senior High School

STI COLLEGE SAN FERNANDO

Energize. It has something to do with amping up skin for the better—or, at the

very least, waking it up.

It is giving your skin a radiant and livelier look

Dewy. Dewy skin has an almost moist appearance. It has natural oils that reflect

light and create a radiance.

Dewy skin is the balanced look on the facial skin wherein it is not too dry and not

too oily. It looks soft and natural

Lackluster. The word lackluster can be defined as lacking in brilliance, radiance,

sheen, or vitality: mediocre... dull.

The lack of radiance of skin that is why it looks dull, pale and tired.

Antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to

cells caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that the body produces as a

reaction to environmental and other pressures.

It is the substance in a plant that can help to slow the damage in the skin

Soothes To soothe is to allay, balm, becalm, calm, compose, lull, quiet, settle,

still, or tranquilize.

To soothe is to balm the irritated or burned skin, it will stop the irritation and it

will also calm the flayed part of your skin

Cakeyness. Cakey is something that happens after a liquid or cream product such

as foundation or concealer is applied or touched up over the top of already set

makeup. It kind of cracks the surface.

Senior High School

STI COLLEGE SAN FERNANDO

Creasing. Creasing can happen with eyeshadows, concealers, foundation etc. it

tends to happen where you have natural folds, fine lines etc.

Creasing is the formed makeup stuck in folds or wrinkles in the face after leaving

the makeup for the whole day

Results and Discussion

This chapter presents the data gathered as well as all the tables and the summary

interpretation.

The researchers surveyed exactly four (4) random respondents ranging from (18 –

20) years old. The four respondents are from Sto. Domingo Village, Mexico Pampanga

and Barangay Cabalantian Bacolor, Pampanga. Two (2) from the four respondents were

chosen to test the existing product from the controlled group and the two (2) remaining

respondents were presented to try the experimental product which is the Rosewater

Hydrating Facial Mist.

In order for the respondents to answer the given questions, the researchers

provided a likert scale to assess their critique.

As mentioned by Betram (2016) a Likert Scale is a type of rating scale used to

measure attitudes or opinions. With this scale, respondents are asked to rate items on a level of

agreement.

The table below represents the legends from the used likert scale to answer the

questionnaires.
