Relative to the proper singing of the music of the liturgy, specifically during the Penitential Act, the

Gloria, and Agnus Dei, please be guided by the discussion below::

1. Form A of the Penitential Act (Confiteor)

The Presider invites the faithful into the recollection of sins and, after a brief period of silence,
the Confiteor is recited. The absolution follows and the Kyrie is then either recited or sung.
In the English masses today, this form is often used and thus, the faithful are encouraged to
become familiar with the text of the Confiteor as contained in the new English translation of the
missal. One may observe also that this form is being used in the Filipino masses for the past few
weeks.

2. Form B of the Penitential Act

The second form of the Penitential Act is an antiphonal dialogue between the priest and the
congregation; the priest begins a verse of Scripture, and the congregation completes it. Similar
to the first form, after the absolution is given by the Presider, the Kyrie follows, either recited or
sung. This form, however, is rarely used.

3. Form C of the Penitential Act

The third form of the Penitential Act integrates three petitions (trope) to the Lord Jesus Christ
with the Kyrie to form a litany. The petitions made by the Presider can vary, but the responses
("Kyrie eleison"/"Lord, have mercy"/"Panginoon, Maawa ka" and "Christe eleison"/"Christ, have
mercy"/"Kristo, maawa ka") are always the same.
As the Kyrie has been integrated into the petitions, there is no need for it to be sung separately.

4. Gloria
Gloria is sung (or said) on Sundays outside of Advent and Lent, and on solemnities and feasts
(even if they fall within weekdays of Advent and Lent), at the Chrism Mass and at the Mass of
the Lord's Supper, and on Easter Vigil). Except on Easter Vigil, the singing of the Gloria
immediately follows the Kyrie in Forms A and B. It is preferred that the Presider intone it if he
has the faculty to do so.

5. Angus Dei
After the Presider invites the faithful into offering the sign of peace, the rite of Fraction,
wherein the consecrated host is broken and, on some occasions, distributed into the ciboria,
follows. Agnus Dei (Lamb of God/Kordero ng Diyos) accompanies the rite of Fraction and not the
greeting of peace. Thus, the singing of the hymn should only begin when the Presider initiates
the rite. The hymn is repeated many times, forming a litany, until the Fraction rite is completed,
but should always end with "Grant us peace"/"Ipagkaloob mo sa amin ang kapayapaan".

To facilitate a smooth flow of the liturgy, all choirs are enjoined to familiarize themselves with these
formats and make themselves capable of singing the Kyrie if the liturgy requires it. The music minister in
charge is likewise encouraged to coordinate with the Presider before the start of the mass as to which
Form he desires to use, whether choir will be capable of singing the Kyrie, and whether he will intone
the Gloria.

The text of these three formats of the Penitential Act is enclosed your guidance.
