To study pH of
different types of soil.
Requirements:Soil
samples(i.e.,garden soil,river
soil,pond soil,roadside soil),test
tubes,filter paper,pH paper of
different range distilled
water,beaker.
Procedure:- Dissolve one
tablespoon soil from each soil
sample in 18 ml of distilled
water in separate beakers.Stir
the solutions well and keep
for half an hour to settle down
the suspended particles.
Filter off each solution in
different test tubes.Dip a
small piece of broad range pH
paper in each of the soil
solution.Match the colour of
pH paper with the colour
scale given on the pH paper
booklet.This gives an
approximate pH.For more
accurate value,take a piece of
narrow range pH paper of the
value indicated by broad
range pH paper and dip them
separately in the soil water
suspensions.Match the colour
of the papers with the pH
scale given on the pH paper
booklet.This will give the
correct value of the pH of the
soil samples.
OBSERVATION:
s.no. Soil samples pH
1. River soil 8.58
2. Pond soil 7.81
3. Garden soil 8.09
4. Roadside soil 7.93

RESULT: All the soils are basic

in nature.
2.Water Holding
Capacity of Soil.

Materials Required:Samples of
soil,filter
paper,water,beaker,measuring
cylinder

Procedure:-
Take the soil
samples.Allow them to dry and
crush them.Take a four beaker and
place funnel in them.place filter
paper in them.weight the soil
samples and put the each samples
of soil in each funnel.Allow water
to pass into them till the upper
surface of the soil become wet.Soil
absorb some amount of water and
remaining water pass into the
beaker.Noted the reading of the
remaining water from the each
soil.
Observation:

S.no. Soil sample Wt. of Water

soil holding
capacity
of soil
1. River soil 25 gm 10 %

2. Pond soil 25 gm 1 %

3. Garden soil 25 gm 5 %

4. Roadside soil 25 gm 3 %
