You have been posted as a new planner to a rural district with natural resources like forests, minerals, and wetlands. The district faces issues of land degradation, pollution, and deforestation while farming and fishing are the main livelihoods. As the planner, you will adopt a Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) approach to address these challenges. CBNRM involves managing natural resources with a focus on supporting the quality of life of present and future generations. This approach allows local communities to interact with the landscape in a way that gives natural areas time to maintain diversity and resilience over time.

DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING STUDENT ID: PLG/0013/18 You are planner newly posted to a rural district that is endowed with natural resources (i.e. forest, minerals, sacred groves, wetlands, etc.). Farming and fishing are the main livelihood options but the district faces challenges of land degradation, pollution, and deforestation among others. As a planner what kind of management approach will you adopt in addressing the COMMUNITY BASED NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (CBNRM) Natural resource management refers to the management of natural resources such as land, water, soil, plants and animals with particular focus on how management affects the quality of life of both present and the future generation. Since the district is endowed with natural resources but still faces the challenges of pollution, land degradation and deforestation, I will use the CBNRM approach to manage the way in which people and natural landscape interact. This would allow the natural landscapes some time to maintain diversity and redundancy. This choice of mine is influenced by the resilience theory.
