FACULTY OF PLANNING AND LAND MANAGEMENT

DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING
STUDENT ID: PLG/0013/18
You are planner newly posted to a rural district that is endowed with natural resources (i.e.
forest, minerals, sacred groves, wetlands, etc.). Farming and fishing are the main livelihood
options but the district faces challenges of land degradation, pollution, and deforestation among
others. As a planner what kind of management approach will you adopt in addressing the
COMMUNITY BASED NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (CBNRM)
Natural resource management refers to the management of natural resources such as land, water,
soil, plants and animals with particular focus on how management affects the quality of life of
both present and the future generation. Since the district is endowed with natural resources but
still faces the challenges of pollution, land degradation and deforestation, I will use the CBNRM
approach to manage the way in which people and natural landscape interact.
This would allow the natural landscapes some time to maintain diversity and redundancy. This
choice of mine is influenced by the resilience theory.
