EXPERIMENT # 8
OBJECT:
To investigate the conservation of energy for an object sliding down a slope.

FORMULA:

Potential Energy: U = mgh

Kinetic Energy: KE = ½ mv2
Total Energy: E = KE + U
E = ½ mv2 + mgh
PROCEDURE:

 Adjust the slope so that the horizontal section is about 20 to 25 cm above the
table. And measure the height (in m)
 Calculate velocity of the object at each point by dividing the distance of the object
(in meters) by the time in seconds.
 Use a balance to find the mass of the object (in kg).
 Use PE = mgh (where m is the mass of the object in kg, g is acceleration due to
gravity, and h is the height of the object placed, Calculate the potential energy of
the at each point.
 Use KE = (1/2) mv2 (where m is the object of the ball in kg and v is the velocity of
the object at that point) to calculate the kinetic energy of the object at each point.
 Add potential energy and kinetic energy together to get total energy.
