Let the class read and identify the solid figures being described and call a
volunteer to point and say something of the solid figure placed on the table.

1. My base is a polygon and my faces are triangles. Who am I? (triangular prism)

2. I am a spatial figure with a polygonal base whose edges meet at a common
vertex. Who am I? (pyramid)
3. I am a spatial figure having a circular base and one vertex. Who am I? (cone)
4. I am a spatial figure with 2 parallel congruent faces called bases and the other
faces are parallelograms. Who am I? (rectangular prism)
5. I am a spatial figure with 2 circular bases, no edge, and no vertex. Who am I?
(cylinder)

prism. The cookies box has a length of 8 inches, a width of 6 inches and a
height of 4 inches. How much material to create a box?

4 in

6 in
8 in

We know that:
1. the bottom and top faces have the same dimensions, 8 in by 6 in
2. the left and right faces (sides) have the same dimensions, 6 in by 4 in
3. the front and back faces have the same dimensions, 8 in by 4 in

Using the area formula for a rectangle, A = bh, we have

1. for bottom and top faces

A = lw
= (8)(6)
= 48 in2
48 x 2 = 96 in2

2. for left and right faces (sides)

A = lw
= (6)(4)
= 24in2
24 x 2 = 48 in2

3. for front and back faces

A = lw
= (8)(4)
= 32 in2
32 x 2 = 64 in2

Adding these areas to find the surface area, we have

96 in2 – bottom and top

+ 48 in2 – left and right
64 in2 – front and back
208 in2 – surface area
Do you want to try using any of the formulas in finding the surface area of a
rectangular prism?
Activity 2: Find the Surface Area

Find the surface area of a rectangular prism with a length of 16 cm, a

width of 14 cm, and a height of 12 cm
Work by pair

The Surface Area of a prism is the SUM of the areas of its faces.
 Top and Bottom = lw + lw = 2lw
 Front and Back = lw + lw = 2lw
 Side and Side = lw + lw = 2lw
 Surface Area = Total = SA
 Surface Area = 2lw + 2lw + 2lw or 2lw + 2wh + 2hl
or SA = 2 (lw + wh + hl)
1. How many faces or rectangles do you see?
2. How many rectangular faces are the same/equal?
3. Can you apply the area of a rectangle formula to SA?

4.4. Abstraction What is a surface area?
