Development of a Plastic Shredder

Abstract

This report covers a project for the Division of Product Development at Lund University to build and
further develop a plastic shredder. It was based on open-source blueprints from the Precious Plastic
machine series, a nonprofit project by Dave Hakkens to reduce plastic waste. Its purpose is to shred
common plastic waste so that the shreds can be remelt to create new products by students in the
subsequent machines of the series. The main goals of the project were to build the shredder at
minimum cost and to develop an improved version after testing it. It was built using in-house machines
at the schools workshop and is powered by a gearmotor build from parts found at a local junkyard.
Minor modifications were made of the original designs to improve handling and assembling of the
machine. The gearmotor and its electronics were also built on a separate platform to create a
modularized unit that is easily detached if desired to be used in other applications.

The shredder worked as intended but caused some difficulties during assembly. The redesign addressed
this issue aswell as increased the rate of cutting action by modifying the knives and counterknives. Due
to lack of time and restricted funds, an actual version of this redesign was never built and tested.

CUTTING MACHINE FOR PLASTICSHEETING

Abstract

This invention relates to a machine for cutting plastic materials and the like into uniform particles, and
more particularly, into cubes. In the commercial production of molding powders Such as polymethyl
methacrylate, poly styrene, ethylene polymers and synthetic poly amides, an important objective is to
produce a molding powder formulation of unifornbulk density. This means that the individual polymer
particles are of substantially uniform size and shape. Molding powders having a Wide distribution of
particle sizes and shapes, and consequently having a variation in bulk density, are highly objectionable in
the molding industry. This is because the molding powder is metered to the molding press cylinder On a
Volume basis, and Variation in bulk density means that injection charges of variable weights are metered
to the molding press cylinder. For this reason, it is necessary to adjust the metering stroke to insure
complete filling of the die cavity to suit material of the lowest bulk density in the batch. But, as the bulk
density of the molding powder increases, this results in Over-Size charges producing a considerable
amount of flash or fins on the noded article.

Domestic plastic bottle shredder

Abstract

The invention is a domestic plastic bottle shredding machine. The machine has a hydraulic ram assembly
located above the shredding mechanism so that any plastic, glass, paper, or aluminum that is introduced
will be flattened prior to being shredded. A waste bin is located beneath the shredding mechanism such
that the storage process is driven by gravity. The machine is designed for domestic uses such that the
shape of the machine resembles a small garbage can. The primary feature of this invention is to aid the
recycling process by shredding plastic, glass, paper, or aluminum in advance of the recycling process

Loads modelling in assembly of multi-disc plastic grindinder

Abstract

Development of computer science facilitates design of machines such as shredders. In this paper, the
authors present it with an example of analysis of loads in a milling assembly. The analysis of multi-disc
shredder is performed by means of advanced software such as TEST-4-TPTS and PSI-GAD-III. In
experimental research, the authors performed a program of quasi-shearing of plastic pipe specimens
made of primary and recycled polymer in order to determine strains and loads in actual shredder.
Continuous machine milling of recycled plastic materials was also examined. This allowed the authors to
determine efficiency, power requirements, comminution quality (degree of disintegration) and the
specific energy consumption per unit in multi-disc shredders.

Method of and apparatus for shredding a web of plastic film

Abstract

A method of shredding a web of material is provided. The web is moved by means of a stream of air
provided by rotating impeller blades in a first path toward a shredder outlet. At least a part of the web is
shredded in this path by stationary first shredding teeth and the shredded portion is immediately moved
out of the outlet by the stream of air. The unshredded portion of the web is pulled from the first path
into a second path and shredded as it moves in the second path by means of stationary second
shredding teeth positioned at substantially a right angle to the first shredding teeth. Then this shredded
part of the web is moved out of the shredder by means of the stream of air.

Design and Fabrication of Plastic Shredder Machine for Clean Environment

ABSTRACT

Plastic shredder is a machine used for cutting the plastic in small pieces to make waste management
easier. This project focuses on recycling of plastic wastage in domestic area, industries etc. In these areas
the plastic waste is present in large quantity, but the available machines used to recycle this waste are
very costly. They packs this waste and give them to the local processing plants. So the process of
packaging and transporting is much costly. So the main intension behind this project is to process the
plastic waste as cheap as possible by shredding where it is made for reducing cost of processing and
transportation.

Development of a Waste Plastic Shredding Machine

Abstract

Plastic is one of the most common used materials in the world today, but, they cause serious
environmental pollution and exhaustion of landfill space. The recycling of waste plastic recovers the
material, which can be used to make new plastic products such as containers, plastic lumbers and
particle boards. For this to happen, the waste plastic will first be shred into small bits making it ready for
transportation and further processing. This necessitated the development of a plastic shredder to recycle
the waste plastic found in Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, Nigeria
environments. The shredder has the feeding unit, the shredding unit, power transmission unit and the
machine frame. The performance of the machine was evaluated and test results showed that there was
a correlation between the machine speed with a regression < 1 and there was a linear relationship with
all variable parameters (The Shredding time (T), the Specific Mechanical Energy (SME), Throughput (TP)
and Recovery Efficiency (RE)) and the variable operation speeds (1806.7 rpm, 1290.5 rpm and 1003.7
rpm). The throughput of the machine is 27.3 kg/hr and the efficiency is 53% for all type of plastic and
95% for Polyvinylchloride type of plastic. The machine is user friendly and the cost of producing one unit
of the machine as at the time of fabrication was estimated to be One Hundred and Forty Thousand,
Seven Hundred and Fifty Naira (N 140, 750:00k) only making it affordable to acquire for small and
medium scale entrepreneurs in waste plastic recycling business.
