The movie Heathers is a 1989 dark comedy starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.

The film depicts four teenage girls, three of them named Heather, in one of the most popular
high school cliques - “The Heathers”. Since the movie, there have been adaptations of both a
musical, (which I personally love) and a television show.
Veronica Sawyer, played by Winona Ryder, is one of the Heathers, along with Heather
Chandler, Heather Mcnamara, and Heather Duke. Though they are one of the most popular
groups at Westerburg High, the Heathers are feared and hated. Veronica gets tired of their
antics quickly, for example when they use Veronica’s skill of imitating people's handwriting to
write a letter to Martha Dunnstock pretending to be one of the most popular jocks in school,
Ram Sweeny. Christian Slater’s character, J.D., conveniently comes into play just as Veronica
is getting annoyed at the three Heathers. J.D. is kind of insane, and ends up shooting Ram and
his other jock friend, Kurt Kelly, who are making fun of J.D., with blanks, and is somehow only
suspended for two days. (The 80’s, right??). Veronica and J.D. end up in a relationship and
wanting to get revenge on the popular kids, have a plan to embarrass the main Heather,
Heather Chandler, by mixing a bunch of gross liquid up and giving it to her. J.D., being the
insane person that he is, wants to instead make her drink liquid plumber, which yes, will kill you.
Veronica doesn’t want to kill Heather, and decides against the liquid plumber. She accidentally
grabs the liquid plumber. J.D., again being psychotic, sees and does not stop her, thus killing
Heather Chandler. They panic and decide to write a fake suicide note, using Veronica’s
handwriting skills. Some other stuff happens involving J.D. and killing people, but eventually
Veronica realizes that J.D. is crazy and tries to stop him from blowing up the entire school.
Hopefully that makes you want to watch the movie and see whether Westerburg High gets
blown to bits or not, because even though the plot is insane and very unrealistic, it’s still one of
my favorite movies ever and is super fun to watch.
Heathers is not at all like actual high school, or any school for that matter, at least in my
experience. I don’t know if anyone else has a father who blows up buildings and rebuilds them
to make money like J.D.’s dad, or if anyone’s faked a suicide note to cover up a murder, but I
know I have not. I think the characters are relatable in some aspects, like how they feel about
high school and popular cliques, but in other aspects are totally not relatable, like how they kill
people, for instance. J.D.’s character is really interesting to me, because yes his dad does blow
up buildings not caring about the people inside, so I get how he may be somewhat emotionally
messed up, but would that really drive him to kill people with no motive? I don’t know, I mean
I’m obviously not in his situation, but I feel like there’s not really a strong connection between
the two. What I liked about the movie was how dark the humor is, and just how ridiculous the
movie is in general. I love the 80’s fashion, and the less relevant characters like Ms. Flemming,
the insane hippie teacher who everyone makes fun of, and Veronica’s parents, who are so
boring that it’s funny. They remind me of my own social life and the people in my everyday life.
Basically, I think Heathers is one of the best movies ever, because it’s not a typical high school
movie, I think all the dark humor and murder make it more interesting than your 80’s high school
movies, like 16 Candles, or Some Kind of Wonderful.
