Expressing purpose

A. We use „to” + „infinitive” to show the purpose of an action.

(TO) + (INFINITIVE)
She went to his office to meet him. (Purpose: to meet him)
I went to the coffee shop to grab something for breakfast. (Purpose: to grab breakfat)
Used for affirmative sentences.
B. „so as to” „in order to” to express purpose
(SO AS) + (TO) + (INFINITIVE)
(IN ORDER)
I went to the coffee shop so as to get coffee. (Purpose: to get coffee)
I am going to Bali in order to visit my friends. (Purpose: to visit my friends)
For negative statement, NOT is added right before the word TO.
in order not to/ so as not to
She exercises regularly so as not to get fat. (Purpose: avoid getting fat)
She studied hard all night in order not to fail the exam. (Purpose: not to fail the exam)
C. „so that” „in order that” to say that one action makes another action possible.
(SO) + (THAT)+ S + VERB
(IN ORDER)
We applied for visa so that we can visit Japan next month. (Purpose: so we can visit Japan next month)
We are starting now in order that we can leave early. (Purpose: so we can leave early)
(SO) + (THAT)+ S + VERB + NOT
(IN ORDER)
I am leaving now so that I will not be late. (Purpose: to prevent getting late)
He bought an umbrella in order that we would not get wet. (Purpose: top revent from getting wet)
