JOSE PROTACIO RIZAL

Juan Mercado (Grandfather) – son of Fransisco Mercado and Bernarda Monica. He married
Cirila Alejandra and had 13 children with her. Like his father he also served as the tow’s
capitan del pueblo. His town mates refer to him as “Capitan Juan”

Cirila Alejandro (Grandmother) - was a Chinese mestiza. She and Francis had 13 children
and lived in a large stone house in Biñan.

Lorenzo Alberto Alonzo (Grandfather) – was a capitan-municipal of Biñan, Laguna, a

representative in the Spanish Cortes, a Knight of the Order of Isabela the Catholic and a
surveyor by profession.

Brigida de Quintos (Grandmother) - married to Lorenzo Alberto and they were blessed with
5 children: NARCISA,TEODORA, GREGORIO, JOSE at MANUEL.
Fransisco Mercado Rizal (Father) – He was born in Binan, Laguna on May 11, 1818. He studied
Latin and Philosophy at the College of San Jose in Manila. Died at the age of 80.

Teodora Alonzo Realonda(Mother) – She was born in Manila on November 8, 1826 and was
educated at the College of Santa Rosa, a well-known College for girls in the city. Died at the
age of 85.

Saturmina Rizal(Sister) – The first child. Neneng was her nickname and she was married to
Manuel T. Hidalgo of Tanawan, Batangas. Died at the age of 63.

Paciano Rizal(Brother) – The second child. He was the only brother and confidant of Jose
Rizal. He joined the Philippine Revolution and became the Combat General. An old bachelor
died at the age of 79.

Narcisa Rizal(Sister) – The third child. Sisa was her nickname. A teacher and a musician.
Died at the age of 87.

Olimpia Rizal(Sister) – The fourth child. Ypia was her nickname. Died at the age of 32.

Lucia Rizal(Sister) – The fifth child. Married to Mariano Herbosa and he was denied of
Christian Burial when he died from cholera because he was the brother-in-law of Dr. Jose
Rizal. Died at the the age of 62.

Maria Rizal(Sister) – The sixth child. Biang was her nickname and she was married to Daniel
Faustion Cruz. Died at the age of 86.

Concepcion Rizal(Sister) – The eight child. Concha was her nickname. Died at the age of 3.
Her death was Rizal’s first sorrow in life.

Josefa Rizal(Sister) – The ninth child. Panggoy was her nickname. An epileptic, died a
spinster at the age of 80

Trinidad Rizal(Sister) – The tenth child. Trining was her nickname. Died a spinster and the
last member of the family to die. Died at the age of 83.

Soledad Rizal(Sister) – The eleventh child. Choleng was her nickname and she was married
to Pantaleon Quintero of Calamba. Died at the age of 59.
