Dorothea Orem’s Self – Care Deficit Nursing Theory
Three Categories of Self Care Requisites
1. Universal Self Care Requisites – are associated with life
processes, as well as the maintenance of the integrity of
human structure and functioning, also called by Orem
as activities of daily living (ADLs) which include:
a. Maintenance of sufficient intake of air
b. Maintenance of a sufficient intake of food
c. Maintenance of a sufficient intake of water
d. Provision of care associated with elimination
processes and excrements
e. Maintenance of balance between solitude and social
interaction
f. Prevention of hazards to human life, human
functioning, and human well-being
g. Promotion of human functioning and development
