4.1 Introductory Activity The learners will work as editors for a national broadsheet.
(5 mins.) One of the writers from the opinion section submitted the
following text, and they are tasked to evaluate it before
editing. Given the properties, the learners will rate each

accordingly.

4.2 Activity (20 mins.) Group the learners into five


1. Based on their past lessons and knowledge, let
the students name properties of a well-written text.
2. Based on their introductory activity, what are
the ideas that they have gathered in arriving into
their answer of number 1 question.
3. Give the learners another text and let them criticize if
it has the properties of a well-written text.

4.3 Analysis ( 5 mins.) Discuss and present their group activity.


Give comments and additional information related to the
learners’ work and presentation.

The students will have to share their answers to the following


questions:
1. What is a paragraph?
2. What are the properties of a well-written paragraph?

3. Why are these properties essential in writing of text?


4.4 Abstraction (5 min.) Organization is a property of a well-written text which
constitutes proper paragraphing and logical order of presentation
of ideas.
(Ostrom, 1978) Paragraphing is a way of making visible to the
reader the stages in the writer’s thinking.
The ‘basics’ to a well-organized paragraph:
1. each paragraph is built around a single idea termed as the
“controlling idea”
2. create a topic sentence which is generally written as opening
sentence of the paragraph
3. employ an appropriate technique from a variety of ways in
developing the topic sentence in a paragraph
4. achieve unity by using appropriate connectives between ad
within paragraphs- STTC (single idea, topic sentence, appropriate
technique and connectives)

4.5 Application (15 min.) Let the learners read a text with unity and without unity, let
them discover the relevance of the property

4.6 Assessment (5 min.) As learners go through the activity, they will critique and
edit the given text to make the properties present in the
text given.

4.7 Assignment (2 mins) Are coherence and cohesion essential in writing a


paragraph? Why?
