CAD users have unique document management requirements and require a specialized solution
designed to work with their CAD system. Adept has been integrated with AutoCAD-based
applications since 1991 and Autodesk Inventor since 2001. Adept has been a SolidWorks Gold
Certified PDM Partner since 2003 and is also tightly integrated with MicroStation. Adept is
designed to easily and effectively address the unique requirements of CAD users in the following
ways:
Find and Re-Use Existing Design Data – Adept’s full text and structured searching methods
allow CAD users to quickly find and re-use existing design data. Adept also provides the ability
to quickly and easily copy and rename complete designs including all related files. Attribute,
Property and Tag Linking – Attributes (AutoCAD), Properties (SolidWorks and Inventor) or Tags
(MicroStation) are automatically extracted into Adept, eliminating manual data entry and
ensuring this information can be utilized when searching for files and generating reports. Because
this link is bi-directional, authorized users can update one or many attributes, properties or tags
from within the Adept interface in single document or batch document mode, without opening the
drawing files in CAD.
File Relationship Management – Adept manages and tracks complex file relationships that exist
within AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks and MicroStation files throughout each documents
lifecycle. As files are checked out, revised, routed through workflow, copied or moved, Adept
ensures all file relationships are intact. Adept displays these file relationships in an easy to
understand tree structure so you can see “where-used” and “composed of” information, and how
changes to one drawing or part may affect many others.
Application Integration – Many Adept features and capabilities are accessible from within your
AutoCAD, Inventor and SolidWorks application, helping design professionals be more efficient
while ensuring effective document management.
Visualization – Each license of Adept includes an integrated seat of Oracle’s AutoVue enterprise
visualization software, the premier solution for viewing, markup, compare and collaboration.
Adept provides native support for viewing of 2D and 3D AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, and
MicroStation files as well as office documents, raster documents, PDF, DWF and more.
Advanced Version Control - Version control is of critical importance, preventing CAD users
from working on an incorrect version, and preventing the wrong version from making it to the
shop floor, purchasing, or a building contractor. Adept’s version control capabilities go deeper for
CAD users when file relationships are used. When files with “parent/ child” relationships are
revised, Adept ensures related files are linked to the correct version of the revised file. You can
configure Adept so that a parent file will always reference the latest version of a child, or so that
it will remain fixed on the original version when appropriate.
In some CAD environments, it is important to track not only “major” versions, but also “minor”
versions. Minor versions are a series of edits that may occur by multiple users prior to the file’s
final approval. By tracking minor versions, you have the flexibility of prototyping multiple
versions of a design prior to checking one in to replace the original file.

documents appropriately as required.

SolidWorks users in the following ways:

Adept’s open and flexible architecture and use of industry standard databases including Microsoft
SQL, Oracle and MySQL make it easy to integrate with enterprise business systems including
ERP, MRP and other enterprise document management systems. These business critical
integrations are accomplished in a variety of ways using different technologies, and the
appropriate method is determined based on each client’s specific requirements. Our staff has
integrated Adept using a variety of different strategies with dozens of different business systems.
Adept includes an Auto Data Exporter, which facilitates data sharing with other business systems.
The Auto Data Exporter is a configurable, event-based application, which exports Adept metadata
to a network location so it can be imported or consumed by other business systems. This tool
provides one of the easiest and commonly used methods to export data from Adept into other
systems.
Adept includes a full featured API that can be used to integrate Adept directly with other business
systems or applications.

Adept provides single or multi-site companies with secure, controlled access to documents from
any connected location. Whether you require a centralized document vault or distributed vaults at
each location, Adept ensures your documents are secure and provides built in version control and
an audit trail for each document throughout its lifecycle.
Adept’s vaulting methodology is unique in that it provides the security and control you need
without encrypting or scrambling your folder structure or filenames, and without importing your
documents into the database itself. Our clients appreciate the fact that their proprietary, mission
critical corporate documents are accessible should they ever need to access them outside of Adept
or should they ever choose to move their information to another repository. Adept never holds
your data hostage. Our fundamental approach also streamlines performance, ease of
administration and backups when compared with systems that import documents into a database.

With Adept, a Group may be given significant access rights to one collection of documents,
minimal rights to another, while having absolutely no access rights to another. Groups can be set
up according to your needs, and can be created based on department, discipline, project teams, or
criteria specific to your organization.
Adept offers flexibility in determining who administers and controls user access rights. Because
Adept provides user access to documents, and because Adept’s interface for controlling rights is
easy to use, IT staff is not required to manage these rights. Many clients have a document control
specialist, project manager or CAD Manager as the administrator for these tasks, as they may be
more appropriate to assign resources based on project workload and priority.
Adept users can maintain a single login for both Adept and Windows, and administrators can
import and update Windows Active Directory user names and group information from within
Adept. Once user names and groups are imported, an Adept administrator can easily assign user
and group permissions to Adept Libraries.
There are three login authentication modes in Adept. Login modes are system-wide and are
managed in a tab of the Admin Options.
• Mode One: Adept Username and Password –Adept Usernames and Passwords are
independent from the Windows domain. A user types a Username and Password and they
are checked against the Adept database.
• Mode Two: Username and Password Authentication through Windows - A user types a
Username and Password and the server authenticates the Username and Password against
the Windows domain. Adept does not save users’ Windows Password and requires a user
to type them in for each log in session.
• Mode Three: Authenticated Login with Username Only - If a user has selected Auto
Login, Adept will try to authenticate the password during start up as long as the
workstation has already been logged on to the domain, and the user has entered a valid
Adept Username. If the Adept login matches the Windows login, Adept will not require a
password (similar to the way Outlook works).
