Sample Parent/Guardian Letter

August 18th, 2019

Dear Families,

Welcome to a new school year! Your students are going to learn and grow so much this
year and I want you all to be a part of that journey with us. Family involvement is
something I really push for in my classroom because it helps to support your child's
success in school. Throughout the year, I hope we can work together to make your
child's school experience awesome! To help me get to know you and your child a little
better, I'm attaching a survey below that I'd really appreciate if you could fill out.

I will be giving each of you all a call during these first two weeks of school so I can
introduce myself and get to know you and your student a little better. During this initial
phone call, I'd like to go through the parent/guardian survey together and also give you
a chance to ask any questions you have about the upcoming school year.
Communication is so important and my hope is that you feel comfortable coming to me
with questions or concerns.

I’d also like to take this time to let you all know that our school typically does home visits
to each family during the month of October. This is a time for us to get to know you all
better and learn more about your family. I am very flexible with home visits and am
happy to meet you all somewhere other than your home, like a favorite park or
community center. You are also welcome to decline a visit. I will be sending out more
information as the time comes closer for that, but I wanted you all to be aware.

During the school year there will be two official Parent Teacher conferences where we
get a chance to discuss your student’s academic and social progress in school. I want
to encourage you to reach out to me before that time or after if you have any questions
or concerns or would like to discuss anything further. Also, I know many of you have
very busy schedules, so I encourage you to let me know if you need to meet at a
different time or at a different location. I will attach my contact information and the best
times to reach me if you’d like to chat or set up a meeting.

I hope to get a chance to meet all of you in person at Back to School Night, but if you
are unable to attend, there will be many other opportunities for you to come visit our
classroom throughout the year! I encourage parents, guardians, and family members to
come to our school events and to stop by our classroom to volunteer. I typically send
out a list of classroom jobs I need help with in the weekly newsletter if you’re ever free
during the school day and would like to come help out our class. I also like to have
family members sign up to come read a favorite childhood story to the class or share a
personal story from your own childhood. The students get so excited to have a guest
storyteller in the class and it's a great way for them to learn more about their peers! In
the past, I’ve also had parents come in and teach us about a a special skill or a cultural
tradition. For example, I’ve had a mother come in and teach us a recipe, and I’ve had a
grandfather come teach us about growing vegetables in our class garden. I’d love to
open up the invitation for you to come share something special with our class. Students
absolutely love when their loved ones come to visit!

Below is a list of opportunities to get involved. I will also keep you updated throughout
the year about these opportunities:

 Back to School Night

 Parent-Teacher Conferences
 Become a storyteller
 Volunteer in our classroom
 Teach a new skill
 Share something from your cultural or family traditions
 Family Nights at School

To keep you all informed about what goes on the classroom, I will send home a weekly
newsletter to give quick updates about things to come in the near future. I also like to
send notes or emails home every week or two with updates and highlights about your
child. If a problem arises with your student, I would also like to be able to contact you so
we can solve that problem together. In the parent survey I’m attaching to this letter,
please indicate the best way for me to contact you in the event that we need to discuss
an academic or behavioral concern.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I'm including my contact information below. I
typically respond to emails between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.
