Course: Engineering Drawing

Assignment-1
Problems
1. On the road map of Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar 2 kms is represented by 1 cm. Ahmedabad-
Gandhinagar distance is 25 kms. PDPU is 15 km from Gandhinagar. Represent it after
preparing the scale for the above.

2. Construct a diagonal scale of R.F. = (1/48) showing yards, feet and inches to represent a
maximum length 8 yards. Mark on the scale a distance 6 yards and 2 feet 7 inches.

3. Draw an ellipse if the distance of focus from the directrix is 45 mm and eccentricity is 4/5.

4. Water comes out of an orifice fitted to the vertical side of a tank and it falls on the ground. The
horizontal distance of the point where the water touches the ground is 75 cm when
measured from the side of the tank. If the vertical distance between the orifice and the point
is 30 cm, draw the path of the jet of water.

5. A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls along a straight line without slipping. Draw the curves traced
by points Q, P and R located 15 mm inside the circle, on the circle and 25 mm outside the
circle respectively. Take initial positions of points Q, P and R at the bottom on vertical center
line of the circle. Name the curves traced.

6. A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls along the circumference of another circle of 150 mm

diameter from outside. Draw the path of a point P on the circumference of the rolling circle
for one complete revolution and name the curve.

7. An ideal gas expands according to Boyle’s law. When the pressure is 0.4 kg/cm 2 the volume is
0.08 m3. Using the suitable scale plot the expansion curve.

8. A rope AB of 120 cm length is wound on a hexagonal prism of side 20 cm in such a way that
the end B is fixed on one corner and the other end A as moved around keeping the rope
always taut. Trace the path of end A.

9. A circle of diameter D rolls without slip on a horizontal surface (floor) by ½ revolution and
then it rolls up a vertical surface (wall) by another ½ revolution. Initially the point P is at the
bottom of circle touching the floor. Draw the path of point P.

10. Draw one complete turn of conical helix 70 mm base diameter and pitch 60 mm. Take the
height of the cone equal to 120 mm.
