Subject: Dynamics of Machinery

Unit: Precession (Unit-I) Part-A

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Define a couple?
A couple is a pair of equal and opposite parallel forces that have tendency to produce
rotation with a turning moment.
2. Define centripetal force?
The component of force acting on a body in curvilinear motion that is directed towards
the centre of curvature or axis of rotation is centripetal force.
3. Define centrifugal force?
The component of force acting on a body in curvilinear motion that is directed away
from the centre of curvature is centrifugal force.
Centrifugal force is equal in magnitude to centripetal force but opposite in direction.
4. Define spinning?
A disc revolving about its own axis called spinning.
5. Define precession?
The angular motion of the axis of the spin about the axis of precession is known as
processional angular motion
6. Define gyroscope?
Gyroscope is a device that can be used to maintain orientation based on angular
momentum
7. Define gyroscopic couple?
It is defined as rate of change of angular momentum.
8. Define angle of wheel?
When wheels move over the curved path the vehicle always inclined some angle with
vertical plane that angle is known as angle of heel.
9. Define steering?
Steering is the turning of complete ship in curve towards left or right direction.
10. Define pitching?
Pitching is movement of complete ship in up and down in vertical plane direction about
transverse axis.
Pitching of the ship is assumed to take place with simple harmonic motion.
11. Define rolling?
Rolling of ship is axis of precession is always parallel to the axis of spin for all position.

12. What is the effect on stern and bow while ship is in pitching?
