He was known for several characteristics.

He had a violent temper but a righteous personality. As a youth, he killed a man for insulting his teacher, and he
once broke a mirror because his reflection upset him. Xiahou Dun was, however, a kind and generous man. He
did labor with his subordinates and rewarded them liberally from his own fortune. He was also a keen scholar
who even went so far as to bring his teacher with him on campaigns so that he did not have to stop studying. He
was a skilled civil official and one who could manage tens of thousands of men with ease.
