What Is Wayang Kulit Made?
What Is Wayang Kulit Made?
Wayang, also known as wajang, is a form of puppet theatre art found in Indonesia and other parts of
Southeast Asia, wherein a dramatic story is told through shadows thrown by puppets and sometimes
combined with human characters.
Wayang kulit is a traditional form of puppet-shadow play originally found in the cultures of
Java, Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. In a wayang kulit performance, the puppet figures are
rear-projected on a taut linen screen with a coconut-oil (or electric) light.
Wayang Kulit are made from water buffalo hide, cut, and punctured by hand, one hole at a
time….. The sticks attached to the base and articulated limbs of the wayang
kulit are made from water buffalo horn and / or wood.
Wayang influenced European puppetry through the work of puppeteer Richard Teschner, who,
in early 20th century, fused the artistic quality and simplicity of wayang Germanic technical
excellence in his Vienesse puppet theater, Figuren Spiegel.
NANG YAI
Nang yai is a form of shadow play found in Thailand and Cambodia. Puppets are made of painted
buffalo hide, while the story is narrated by songs, chants and music. Nang means "leather", and in
common usage refers to a dance-drama shadow puppet show.
The Nang is classified into two groups. One is called Nang Talung, whereas the other
is Nang Yai. Nang Talung uses leather puppets which have movable limbs controlled by a
string. Another grander version of the shadow puppet art is called Nang Yai, which means big
hide, so the shadow puppets are more life sized.
The nai nang is the puppet master of South Thailand's nang talung. He uses small, translucent
shadow figures to perform in Songkla, Phattalung, and Nakhon Si Thammarat areas. He is the
head of the nine person troupe.
The word NANG is usedin Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese, Thai, Filipino, is a general
term meaning good,great,when,able to,skin,of,already,conversation,toin.
