BSHRM-II NEWSPAPER TERMINOLOGIES 1. FLAG/ NAMEPLATE- the engraved or printed name of the newspaper. 2. FOLIO LINE- Consists of the page number, date of publication and name of the newspaper usually written on top or bottom part of the page. 3. MASTHEAD/ EDITORIAL BOX- Containing the logo, names of the staff members and position in the staff, subscription rate, the publisher and other pertinent data about the newspaper. 4. HEADLINE- The words printed in large type across the top of a newspaper article to catch the reader’s attention. 5. BY-LINE- The name of the writer of a news story or article. 6. LEAD- The beginning of a news story. It may be a word, a group of words, a sentence or even a paragraph. 7. NEWS STORY- Give an account of events that have recently happened. The story aims to keep the readers up to date on the important political, economic, cultural and other events. 8. JUMP HEAD- The headline printed over the continued portion of a story in a newspaper, magazine, etc., usually condensed from the main headline. 9. EDITORIAL- Commentary written by any of the editors who comments or gives the opinion of the staff or of the whole paper on various subjects. 10. COLUMN- These part express the columnists’ views or stand on any issue of the day. 11.CLASSIFIED ADS- An advertisement that uses only text, as opposed to a display ad, which also incorporate graphics. 12. SPORTS SECTION- Things that may be found in the sports section are the sports commentaries and sports features. 13. OBITUARY- A news article that reports the recent death of a person, typically along with an account of the person’s life and information about the upcoming funeral.
