Why Preventive and Predictive Maintenance

I was working on the maintenance programme and was thinking for explaining the importance of it to my
clients. And suddenly I remembered one of my day to day life experience and found the good analogy for
the above question, and wished to share with you. I would share the same, scene wise so it would be easy
when I can explain you the intention behind this in mathematical way.
Scene I
I had joined my first company few years back with office timing of 9A.M., needed to travel by local
train/railway and then connecting bus services.
Being new for train travelling, I called up my friend who used to travel by train, to check with him for usual
timings for train, he replied trains are there every 5‐15 minutes interval.
I started, I never had to wait more than 10 minutes on platform, I thought myself to be the average lucky
guy that I neither encountered the max limit of 15 min nor minimum of 5 mins.
Scene II
After a month my shift changed and had to go in afternoon, with experience of above I considered myself
lucky and with 10 mins consideration I started from home, I had to wait for more than 15 mins for train on
that day and missed my connecting bus service as well. Wasted 5‐10 mins on the platform doing nothing
and paid 5 times more money to auto rickshaw because of missing the bus.
It triggered my senses and I was fool to believe in good luck bad luck. I analysed and found.

Above stats clearly explains why did it happened to me. What I want to emphasise here that I was
completely unaware of the part II information, if I had searched for it I could have saved my losses. This
triggered me more and increased my belief in continuous improvement. Then I purchased train time table
and started to go on the time.
Above experience seems to be of a normal/common sense however conclusion I would like to make here
that, every one of us must always look for the scope of improvement, that is part 2 information, whether
we are missing on something. The profit loss is function of time and it can be linear function of time and it
can be exponential function of time.
The role of friend can be taken up by external consultants, role of time table can be taken up by
professional consultants. Hence predictive maintenance is like looking for part II information and it is a
continuous process. We must keep on improving for two reason either we know the exact loss and we
want to be proactive or we want to save more money and more time.
