BMKG warns of extreme

weather before rainy
season peak

The Meteorology, Climatology and

Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has called on
the public to remain vigilant about
extreme weather throughout the country
in the next two months during the shift to
the rainy season.

Miming Saepudin said the agency
predicted the rainy season would reach its
peak in January and February of next
year. However, November and December
will likely see bad weather and an
increased chance of hydrometeorological
disasters.

“We have to watch for potential extreme

weather during the seasonal transition
period, including puting beliung [weak
tornadoes], hail and extreme
temperatures,” Miming explained.

According to the agency, downpours after

the prolonged dry season are predicted to
first hit Aceh, North Sumatra, West
Sumatra and the northern reaches of
Papua, among other regions.

“Aceh and Sumatra must be on the

lookout for floods and landslides,” he said.

Heavy surf may occur in the waters of

southern and southwestern Sumatra as
well as southern Java, reaching up to 2.5
meters in height, BMKG predicted.

“Beware of the potential for strong

currents from western Sumatra to
southern Bali and West Nusa Tenggara,”
Miming said.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency

(BNPB) has allocated Rp 850 billion
(US$60.6 million) for disaster relief
through the end of this year. The money
will be used to mitigate
hydrometeorological disasters, including
floods and landslides, in any region of the
