Part 1 – November 6 (Wednesday)
Activity – Objective: Explain the meaning of disaster; Differentiate the risk factors underlying disasters.

Concept Development
The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups and shall instruct them to communicate their prior knowledge on
common disasters they have encountered or have known. In-class presentation and teacher-facilitated
discussion follow.

A. Guide Questions
1. After discussion then, what is disaster means?

B. Discussion Content
1.Disaster is a sudden, calamitous event, bringing great damage loss, destruction and devastation to life and property.
A serious disruption of the functioning of society, causing widespread human, material, or environment losses, which exceed the ability
of the affected people to cope, using their human resources.
2. How and When an Event Becomes a Disaster? It is An event, either human –made or natural, becomes a disaster when it is
sudden or progressive, causing widespread human, material or environmental losses.
3. What are the disasters our country suffered the most?

 Typhoon Yolanda - Strength 290km/hour. The storm surge it brought was sudden and unexpected. Its devastating
effect to human, material, and environment. More than 7000 people perished. The entire city of Tacloban was flattened.
 Wow wowie Stampede. The show became so popular that thousand of fans flock to ULTRA to watch the noon time show. That
turned out to disastrous tragedy when there was a human – induced disturbance among the watching crowd that cause a
stampede. Many spectators were hurt and some even died which led to the dissolution of said TV program.

 Typhoon Ondoy turned into a disaster because of the amount of precipitation brought by its torrential rains that
lasted for several days causing floods and flash floods in Metro Manila. Thousands of houses were submerge in flood
water. Hundreds of shelters along river banks and steros were washed out. Power and water supplies were cut
off for several weeks. Hundreds of lives perished.
4. What is a disaster risk means? The probability that a community’ structure or geographic area is to be
damaged or disrupted by the impact of a particular hazard, on account of its nature, construction and proximity to a hazardous
area. It signifies the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It is derived from the interaction of social and environmental
process, from the combination of physical hazards and the vulnerability of exposed areas.

Part 2 November 7, 2019 Review of the past lesson.

The teacher will divide the class into a pair and shall instruct them to communicate their prior knowledge on what we have already discussed. In-class
presentation and teacher-facilitated discussion follow.

A. Guide Questions

1. What are the nature of disasters?


2. What are the human made disasters? Can cite examples.

B. Discussion Content
1. Nature of Disasters - These originate from the different ‘forces’ of nature . Natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, typhoons, and cyclones affect many countries in Asia particularly the Philippines.
2. Human – made – These disaster occur due to people’s actions against human, material and environment. These include transport
And industrial accidents, such as air and train crashes, chemical spills, and building collapses. Terrorism is also categorized as
human – made disaster.
C. Discussion with the whole class?
1. What are the possible readiness we can do in order to avoid so much distraction?
2. If you experience disaster anytime and anywhere what will be your initial move or reaction?
3. Will you be willing to extend help with those who are in need or will just mind of your own business?
Part 3 November 8, 2019 Review of the past lesson.

Activity – Objective: Identify areas/locations exposed to hazards that may lead to disasters; and

Concept Development

The teacher will divide the class into four and will ask them to have a performance task wherein they have to perform or act as a team discussing the
different disasters might happen to any places whether in our country or outside our country.
