standar d Inst rom et turbin e gas meter. Every effort has b een m ade to ensure that the inf orm ation co ntai-
ned in this manual is as accurate as possible, however, the continuous improvements which Instr omet
m akes to it s product s m ay result in sm all inco nsistencies. Custom m anufact ur ed equip m ent or “sp ecials”
m ay also r esult in differences. It is therefore prudent to consult the specific technical d ata and other docu-
m entat ion which accom panies the m eter. If in any dou bt, Instro met should be contacted.

Accessories
Various accessories such as volum e cor rectors, f lo w comp ut er connect ions, pr essure and t em perature
t ransm itters et c. can be fitted to Instr om et Tu rbine Meter s. The vo lum e corr ectors are conn ected to th e LF

Wh en connect ing th ese accessor ies, reference shou ld be m ade to th e instructio ns an d other docum en-
t ation which accom pany these p roducts.
Installation
The Instromet turbine meter has been designed to average the gas velocity and provides accurate
measurem ent even w hen t he velocity pro file is distort ed. Where stron g sw irl or extr em e p rofile distortion
exists the meter m ay o ver o r under register; the degree of erro r being dependen t on t he degree of distor-
t ion. The m eter is essentially less sensit ive to flow d isturbances and upstream piping conf ig uration s than
o rifice plates but in stallations su it able f or use with o rifice p lates can be used and will give an even better
perfor m ance with the In st ro m et m eter. Alternatively, arrangem ents r ecom m en ded f or turbine m eter s
m ay be used allowing for m ore com pact installations. Tube b undle f low st raigh teners as descr ibed in ISO
and AGA st andard s are also suit able.
If the m eter being installed is an SM -RI w ith th e new X4X built -in straig htener, only 2D o f straight pipe
is required upstream o f th e m eter in o rd er to keep the eff ect of pertur bat io ns w it hin ± 0.33% fo r flow
rates between 20% and 100% of m axim u m flo w rates. This perm its the design of very tigh t inst allations
w ithout an y eff ect on accu racy. It also red uces the uncertain ty caused by inst allation effects to an extr e-
mely low level when used in conventional installations. The increase in the pressure drop with such a
m eter is quit e sm all.
Wher e regulat ors or sim ilar devices are used im m ed iately upstream in very com p act installations where
jets could impinge on the meter, the use of a tee is recommended. Downstream piping may be of any
co nf iguration p ro viding the m eter is connect ed in itially to pipew ork equivalent to the n om inal bore o f
t he m eter p rior to any reduction . Reducer s (one siz e reduction ), elbows, t ees and f ull bore valves can be
attached directly to the meter. If temperature is to be measured downstr eam, it is recommended that
such m easurem ent be installed within 2 diam eters of t he m eter.
Turbine m eters should norm ally b e installed h orizon tally wit h th e ind ex on top alth ough vert ical instal-
latio n is possible with so m e m eter sizes. If liquids are in the st ream or if the gas is m oist, t he m eter p ipe
should b e sloped t o allow an y liquid t o flow away fr om the m et er. Where a vertical in st allation is used,
the flow of t he st ream must be do wnwar ds.
Instrom et tu rb in e m eters m ay b e subjected to f lows of 20% h igher than t he maxim um specif ied for
short periods of time with out dam age to th e m et er. Ho wever, excessive rotor speeds will d ecrease the life
o f th e m et er if such over speeds are freq uent or of long duration.

When installing a meter outdoors, it should be protected from the direct effects of the weather.
Electr onic accessories m ust also be protected from the elem ents and fro m extrem e am bient conditions.

of damage mu st be reported to the carrier.
2. Aft er unpacking the m eter, exam ine it f or com pliance w it h the o rdered specifications and check t hat
any r equired accessory such as a volu me corr ector is included. Check t he test certif icate supplied with
the m eter and ensur e that t he inform ation con cerning th e calibration, p ressur e r ange, tem p erat ur e
etc. is in acco rdance with the actual installation.
3. A bott le of the recom mended lubricat ion oil is also nor m ally inclu ded.
4. TAKE PARTICULAR CARE TO RETAIN ALL DOC UMENTS SHIPPED WITH THE M ETER AS THEY ARE METER -
SPEC IFIC AND R EQUIRED FOR M ETER RECORDS .
6. Check to ensure the turbine wheel turns sm oothly (use an air jet or sim ply blow into th e inlet).
The wheel shou ld not sto p abr uptly or show signs of unbalan ce.
9
Inst alla tion of the Met er
After the ab ove inspections, th e m et er can be installed as fo llows:
1. Make sur e that the installation is clean, free from swarf, sand, other particulate matter or liquids.
Ensur e f lange faces of bo th the m eter and th e installat io n are sim ilarly clean and fr ee of any foreign
par ticles, both inside and ou tsid e the openings.
2. Noting flow direction , lift the m eter into th e mo unting position usin g th e lif ting lugs or eyebolt s. Take
care that the index head or other m ounted devices are clear of any lifting strop.
3. Po sition the gaskets carefully, ensuring t hat there is no protrusion int o the line which wo uld thus cause
a dist urban ce to the f low.
5. The Mu lti-Ind ex can be ro tated up to 350° f or easier reading. To alter t he position loo sen t he two set
screws with a 2.5m m Allen key an d tighten carefully once the index has been r epositioned.
6. Conn ect probes and electr onics on the ind ex according t o the diagram s accom panying the equip m ent.
Th e referen ce p ressure m ust be taken at the point on the m eter labelled “Pr”. If the m eter is inst alled
in a z one classif ied as a hazard ous area, then ensu re all conn ections are to intrinsic safe circuits.
7. Fill oil reservoir with oil sup plied with the m eter and pum p as required to lubricate the b earings.
Start-up
1. Th e Instromet tur bine m eter is a h igh precision in strum ent d esigned to g ive m aximu m perform ance at
its operatin g con ditions. The meter m ust b e put into service b y opening t he valve slow ly to pressurise
the line at a rate (of no t less than 15 secon ds duration) t hat will allow a gr adu al acceleration o f the
turb in e wheel. Th e shock of a sudden p ressu rising o f the line can dam age the t urbine. The design of
the installatio n should b e such t hat pressurising t he m eter can b e achieved through a sm all d iam eter
t ube, prefer ably connected so t hat t he m eter is located in th e sm allest volum e of the part of t he in stal-
lation bein g pressurised.
2. B y choosing th e int ernal diam eter of the pip e which by-passes the m ain valve as indicated in the table
below, the flow rate will be limited to the listed value (for natural gas). The flow rate through the
m eter sho uld at no tim e exceed the stated maxim um flow rate by m ore t han 20%.
3. If a m eter is m ounted in a p art of th e installat io n that had been separately d e-pressur ised, particular
care has to be taken when subseq uently pr essur ising the pip e work d ownstream of the m etering instal-
latio n. Pref erably t he down stream piping should also be pressur ised th ro ugh a p ipe according to the
t able. This valve m ust also be operat ed carefully in order to prevent overspeedin g the m eter.
4. C heck for leakag e part icularly around the flang es and at the Pr con nect ion.
5. Ensure counter is rot ating corr ectly and other inst rum ent devices are operat ing as required.

Maintenance
Periodic Inspections
L ike all p recision instrum ents an Instrom et turbine m eter is vuln erable to abu se and o perating con di-
tions ou tside its specifications and lim its. It is pru dent therefore to periodically ch eck t he security and run-
n ing con dition of the m et er. It is essential that t his be do ne if a significan t over pressure has o ccurred , if
the installatio n has been subjected to abn or m al vibr ation or if the gas should becom e excessively co nt a-
minated.
Certain turbine meters can be inspected without removal from the line. If the meter in question is
equ ip ped wit h a Repr ox pro be sensing the turbine blades, or has a plug fitted at that locat io n, the turbi-
n e wheel b lades can be in sp ected b y rem oving t he prob e or plug . This opening also per m it s a ‘sp in test’
(d escribed below ) and thus a check on t he bearings t o be conducted w ithout the necessity of removing
t he m eter f rom t he line.
CAUTION: In som e cases, removal of t he pr obe b reaks the met rolo gical seal.
Instr omet Spin Test Procedure A jet of gas, for example from a cylinder of compressed nitrogen or air,
directed at t he tu rbine blades is sufficient to spin the r otor w hich must continu e to rotate for a pre-deter-
m ined time, sho wn in the acco m panying t able. It shou ld be noted, however, that the times given are indi-
cative on ly an d depending on t he age of t he m eter, cleanliness of the oil, viscosit y etc. these t im es m ay
vary. If in doubt an Instr om et techn ician shou ld be consulted .
1. If the meter h as been r em oved fr om the lin e, place it in a draft free area, w it h open sp ace of at least
1.5m from the in let and ou tlet. If the m et er is still installed en su re there is sufficient op ening down-
stream fo r the air to escape.
2. S lo wly increase t he speed of t he rotor with the air g un and let it run at m aximum speed fo r about 1
minute.
3. Stop the air f low and sim ultaneously co mm ence th e tim ing.
4. Stop the tim in g wh en th e tur bine wheel comletely stop s rotating in t he or iginal direction.

Lubrication procedure
To extend the lifetime and maintain the accuracy of a turbine meter lubrication of the bearings is
necessary. F lu shing th e bearing s with o il not only ensu res effective lubricat io n b ut also r em oves foreign
particles which m ay have entered fr om the g as. The fr equency o f lubricat io n depend s on the operating
co nditio ns and is for clean gas an d norm al operations, 2-3 tim es per year. Instro m et recom m ends Isof lex
PDP 38 Oil or its equivalent .
Th e follo wing p um ps are stand ard fit tings on SM -RI turbine m eters. Alternatively, the pu m ps m ay be
rep laced by a lubrication nipple and the meters lubricated by an ext ernal port able lubrication ‘gu n’.
Befor e lubrication, ensure t he reservoir contain s clean , uncontam inated oil. The reco m m ended qu antity
o f oil to b e used each tim e is 1/2 cc of oil f or every inch o f diameter (i.e. 5cc for 10” m eter.)
If it is suspected t hat t he problem is co nf in ed to the in dex h ead, (no obvious no ise o r vibration) t he
index can be checked while the line rem ains pr essurised.
NOTE: In m any cases, t he index head is officially sealed against un aut ho rised interfer ence. Br eakin g or
dam aging these seals m ay invalidate th e calibrat ion and may invalidate the war ranty.
If an electr onic m easurem en t outp ut does not ap pear t o work or if it does not ag ree with the mecha-
n ical co un ter, a switch or im pulse generator m ay be ap plied t o the ap pr opriate m ale pins which are nor-
mally connected to the meter. Check that the polarity, pin connection, voltages and currents are in
accordan ce w it h the specification. If th e results of t he test sh ow s th at the p olarity and pin con nect ions
are co rrect, than a failu re in the inter nal m eter elect ronics m ay by p resent.
NOTE: If the meter is lo cated in a z one classified as h azardo us, all conn ection s m ust be to intrinsically safe
cir cuits.
14
If excessive condensation exists inside the index, r eplace the silicagel element (wher e ap plicable). On older
m eters th e drain/ventilation screw of t he bo ttom side of t he in dex n eck can be removed.
Dismantling
Before a m et er m ay be dism an tled or rem oved from th e installation, t he line m ust be de-pressurised.
It is im po rt ant that the line is de-pr essurised slowly an d with car e to pr event dam ag e to th e turbine and
bearings. It is recom m ended t hat t he gas be r eleased th ro ug h a sm all d iam et er tube selected in accor -
dan ce wit h th e pressurisatio n tab le on page 11.
It is strongly recom m ended th at dism an tlin g of the m eter and any repair to the inter nals, be p erfor -
m ed by an author ised In strom et technician. Distu rbance to the align m ent of the internals m ay introduce
an er ror to the measur ement requiring a re-calibration. If in doubt, advice may be obtained from
Instromet.

MEASURING RANGE
The SM-Ri gas tu rbine m eter has a m easuring range of 20: 1 w ith air at atm osph eric condit ions. The tu rbi-
n e rotor will start to tu rn at t he flow rates listed in the t able b elow. (These flow rates are f or at m ospheric
air and are approximate values.)
At higher operat ing densities, t he rangeab ilit y of t he tu rbine m eter will increase since the required kinetic
ener gy transfer to the turbine roto r occurs at lower velocities. The following equation may be used to esti-
