EXPERIMENT NO 13 PRC1 LAB MANUAL

Determine Splitting Strength Of Concrete Specimen

01.STANDARD:
ASTM C496-17
02.INTRODUCTION:
Concrete is brittle in nature. Cracks develop by applying excessive tensile
force. This test is used to find out the splitting tension force that causes cylinder to split.
03.IMPORTANCE:
Using the value of this splitting tension force we design the structural
members with desired specifications like weight and shear resistance.
04.APPARATUS:

 Universal testing machine

 Bearing strips
 Bearing bars

4.1 UTM 4.2 Bearing bars

4.3 Bearing strips

05.PROCEDURE:
We started by weighing the specimen. Then we placed the specimen in the
machine and placed the bearing bar and bearing strips on upper and lower side of the specimen
respectively perpendicular to its cross section. Then we applied the load continuously and found
out the splitting strength of concrete.
06.OBSERVATION:
Size of cube = 150×300 mm
Thickness of strip = 3.2mm
Width of strip = 25mm
Height of strip = no limit
FORMULA
T = 2P/πld
07.CALCULATIONS:
1. Max applied load = 27.1 Tons = 265852 N
Dia. of specimen = 150mm
Length of specimen = 300mm
Splitting tensile strength = 2P/πld = 3.75957744 MPa
2. Max applied load = 15.3 Ton = 150093 N
Dia. of specimen = 150mm
Length of specimen = 300mm
Splitting tensile Strength = 2.122565865 MPa
MEAN:
= 2.94107166
RESULT:
Splitting tensile strength of specimen is = 2.94 Mpa
